Hardware wallet maker Coldcard has paused its automatic customer data deletion mechanism due to legal compliance requirements arising from a security incident disclosed on July 30. Previously, customer records were automatically purged after 120 days, retaining only email addresses and country information. Records potentially relevant to litigation will now be kept until legal processes allow normal operations.

Hardware wallet maker Coldcard says it has changed its customer data retention policy, putting a temporary stop to the automatic deletion of customer data because legal compliance duties kicked in after a security incident disclosed on July 30.

Before this, Coldcard’s usual policy was simple: automatically delete customer records after 120 days, while keeping only user email addresses and country information. Customers could also ask for their data to be deleted early at any point after product delivery.

Coldcard said the security incident has led to ongoing and possible legal proceedings, so the company must preserve records that could matter in litigation. Because of that, customer data that would normally be deleted on schedule will be kept for now, until legal requirements allow a return to the usual process. But users can still ask Coldcard to treat their personal information under the original data retention policy.
