The panel titled “How Decentralized is DeFi Really?” set aside lofty ideals for a harsher reality: temporary centralization is not a betrayal but a survival tactic.

The 'Decentralization Illusion' Fades

Anand Gomes, head of Paradigm and Paradex, dismissed binary thinking about decentralization. He framed most protocols as being in an unavoidable “incubation phase.” Gomes famously compared a protocol founder to a parent: “You want your kids to be strong and independent once they grow up, but that doesn't mean you leave them unattended in their infancy.” He argued that keeping admin keys and centralized guardrails during the first 18 months is a fiduciary duty — a protocol exploited in its first six months has no future to decentralize.

Vitalik vs. L2 Founders: Government vs. Business

Gomes positioned Ethereum's Vitalik Buterin as head of a “government” (layer 1) focused on neutral, constitutional rules. In contrast, L2 founders act as “businesses” chasing growth. While Buterin pushes for “stage 1” decentralization to keep the base layer a “freedom machine,” Gomes insisted founders must be “stubborn” in protecting their protocols during early vulnerability. The trade-off is clear: absolute decentralization comes only after the protocol survives its most fragile phase.

Hardware and Institutional Gravity

Glenn Woo of Blockdaemon noted that as DeFi scales to meet institutional demand, hardware and security requirements naturally create layers of centralization. “For DeFi to survive the scrutiny of global clearinghouses like the DTCC, it needs professionalized, robust infrastructure,” Woo said — even if that means trading pure decentralization for institutional-grade reliability. Benji Loh of Treehouse echoed that temporary centralization is the “price of entry” for Wall Street tailwinds needed to fund a resilient ecosystem. He observed that even the most successful protocols only push for decentralized ideals after achieving product-market fit and stable trading infrastructure.

Rules, Not Chaos

Arion Ho, CEO of ENI, stressed that the path to true decentralization must be paved with “transparent rules” rather than immediate, chaotic oversight. “Decentralization is not really a form of what kind of governance we’ve been doing,” Ho said, “it’s how to avoid having too much human intervention.” By hard-coding verifiable, rule-based structures into the system’s DNA, founders ensure that when keys are eventually handed to the community, the transition is safe and sustainable.

As Goldman Sachs and other institutions move trillions of dollars on-chain, the panel’s consensus was stark: the goal is no longer just to remove intermediaries, but to ensure that when the “parental” guardrails finally come off, the protocol is mature enough to withstand global market scrutiny.
