The Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a nonprofit community, has teamed up with Unified Patents to launch Blockchain Zone, a new initiative designed to combat patent trolls targeting blockchain and cryptocurrency technologies. The partnership aims to shield blockchain innovations from baseless patent assertions by non-practicing entities (NPEs), which are commonly referred to as "patent trolls."

How Patent Trolls Stifle Innovation

In an official statement, COPA emphasized that NPEs profit primarily from litigation or the threat of litigation, rather than from developing or using the patented technologies. These entities "hinder innovation and stifle the growth of the crypto-economy," the alliance said. Paul Grewal, Chief Legal Officer at Coinbase, commented: "Patent trolls are barriers in the path of innovation; they hinder the progress of technology and stifle the spirit of creativity, particularly in the fast-evolving world of cryptocurrency. They must be stopped so that the community can continue to do the important business of building the crypto-economy."

Steve Lee, Lead at Spiral and a COPA member, noted that the nonprofit has worked diligently to reduce barriers to crypto innovation. The partnership with Unified Patents will further the organization's mission to protect community members from patent trolls. Kevin Jakel, founder and CEO of Unified Patents, praised the collaboration as a "wonderful opportunity" to ensure the technology remains free and unhindered by "all-too-common baseless patent assertions affecting other sectors of the economy."

Scale and Industry Impact

Unified Patents already works with over 300 companies committed to deterring the assertion of invalid patents by NPEs. Through Blockchain Zone, COPA members will have access to shared patent defense resources and collective challenges against questionable patents. The initiative is expected to lower legal risks for startups and developers, fostering healthier growth in the crypto economy.

This partnership represents one of the most extensive patent defense programs COPA has launched. Previously, COPA successfully challenged several Bitcoin-related patents, including those claimed by Craig Wright regarding the Bitcoin whitepaper and associated intellectual property.

Industry analysts warn that as crypto regulation tightens globally, patent troll activity may intensify. The COPA-Unified Patents alliance provides a necessary legal shield for the industry. The statement concluded by inviting more crypto companies and developers to join the alliance to collectively safeguard the innovation environment.
