Core Scientific is moving ahead with a major strategic shift, converting its cryptocurrency mining campus in Denton, Texas, into an artificial intelligence-focused data center hub valued at $6.1 billion. The project highlights how bitcoin mining operators are increasingly repositioning their infrastructure to serve the fast-growing demand for AI computing.
Power and land capacity are being expanded
Under revised lease agreements and power contracts with the city of Denton, Core Scientific will secure access to 394 megawatts of electricity, up from the previous 297 megawatts. The Denton City Council also approved amendments that allow the company to lease an additional 47 acres, bringing the campus to a total of 78 acres. These changes provide the physical and energy capacity needed for larger-scale AI deployments.
A broader pivot beyond bitcoin mining
CEO Adam Sullivan said the Denton site is expected to host one of the largest GPU supercomputers in North America. The company is reallocating more of its nine U.S. data centers toward AI-related workloads, betting that AI infrastructure can provide steadier long-term revenue than the cyclical and volatile economics of cryptocurrency mining.
Core Scientific’s move fits into a wider industry pattern. As demand for high-performance computing rises, several bitcoin mining firms are adapting their existing power-heavy infrastructure for AI and other compute-intensive services. The report notes that companies such as Terawulf and Bit Digital have also expanded into high-performance computing.
Post-bankruptcy restructuring and long-term contracts
The transition comes after Core Scientific emerged from bankruptcy in January. By diversifying its operations, the company aims to remain involved in limited bitcoin mining while building a stronger position as a data center provider. It said its current agreements with AI customers, including Coreweave, carry a total value of $8.7 billion over 12 years, giving the business a long-duration revenue base as it evolves.
Jobs and energy concerns both matter
According to the company, the Denton expansion is expected to create between 130 and 300 full-time jobs, with average annual salaries of about $70,000 to $75,000. Core Scientific is also seeking state-level incentives to help offset project costs. Even so, the energy-intensive nature of AI data centers remains a point of concern for local officials, underscoring the ongoing debate over how to balance economic development with power usage and resource allocation.
