Financial markets rarely behave logically. Sharp price swings are the norm, and the more momentum builds, the more erratic the market becomes. Investors are prone to emotions—fear and greed being the two most powerful. To gauge their impact, CNNMoney created the Fear & Greed Index for stocks, which Alternative.me later adapted for cryptocurrencies.
How the Index Works
The Crypto Fear & Greed Index uses a scale from 0 to 100. 0 signals extreme fear, 100 signals extreme greed. Neither extreme has ever been reached. Near zero, sellers (bears) dominate, prices fall, and the meter is red. Near 100, buyers (bulls) drive prices up, and the meter turns green. Specific thresholds: 0-24 is extreme fear, 25-49 is fear, 50 is neutral, 51-74 is greed, and 75-100 is extreme greed. The closer the reading gets to either end, the higher the chance of a price correction or trend reversal.
Five Data Components
Alternative.me's index aggregates five weighted factors:
Volatility (25%): Measured by Bitcoin's maximum drawdown, compared against its 30-day and 90-day averages. High volatility combined with heavy sell-offs indicates fear.
Market Momentum/Volume (25%): Also compared to 30/90-day averages. Surging daily buying volume suggests greed-driven markets.
Social Media (15%): Analyzes Twitter hashtag interactions related to top coins (only Bitcoin shown currently). A spike in engagement signals a greedy phase.
Dominance (10%): Bitcoin's market cap share acts as a safe-haven proxy. Rising dominance – capital fleeing altcoins to Bitcoin – points to fear. Falling dominance – money flowing into altcoins – points to greed.
Trends (10%): Uses Google Trends data to track search terms like "Bitcoin market manipulation" (fear) or "buy Bitcoin" (greed). Volume changes reveal the prevailing emotion.
Can You Trust the Index?
The Fear & Greed Index is a useful research tool, but it should never be the sole basis for investment decisions. Pair it with fundamental and technical analysis. It serves as an assessment of current sentiment, not a predictive tool, and requires supplementary indicators.
