The composition of the top 10 crypto assets by market capitalization changed meaningfully over the past year, even as bitcoin (BTC), ether (ETH), and tether (USDT) continued to hold the first three positions. Beneath that stable top layer, however, rankings shifted, new entrants emerged, and several established names lost ground.
BNB held steady while Solana made a major leap
According to the source material, BNB ranked fourth in July 2023 at $234 per coin. As of July 9, 2024, it remained in fourth place, but its price had climbed to $509. The bigger positional move came from Solana. A year earlier, SOL was ranked ninth and traded at $21.35. It has since advanced to the fifth spot, with its price rising to $138 per coin.
That jump pushed USDC, which occupied the fifth position in July 2023, down to sixth. The move highlights how quickly market-cap standings can change when a major asset posts a sharp price appreciation over a relatively short period.
TON emerged as a new top-10 entrant
One of the most notable developments in the past year was the rise of toncoin (TON). Previously known as GRAM in an earlier phase, TON was ranked 15th in July 2023 and traded at $1.36. It has now climbed into the eighth-largest market cap position, with its price reaching approximately $7.12 per coin.
TON’s entry into the top 10 is significant because it displaced a previously established asset and demonstrated that the upper tier of the crypto market is still open to change. While the top three remain unchanged, the lower half of the top 10 has become increasingly competitive.
XRP, ADA, and DOGE shifted positions despite mixed price moves
XRP, which ranked sixth a year ago, now sits in seventh place as USDC moved ahead of it in the market-cap standings. Its price slipped from $0.46 to $0.43 per unit over the same period.
Cardano (ADA) also moved lower in the rankings. It held the seventh spot in July 2023 but has since dropped to tenth. Even so, its price increased from $0.284 to $0.367 per ADA. Dogecoin (DOGE) followed a similar pattern: it moved from eighth to ninth, while its price rose from $0.065 to $0.106.
These moves show that price appreciation alone does not guarantee an improved ranking. Market capitalization depends not only on price performance but also on how competing assets perform over the same period.
Litecoin fell sharply out of the top tier
The most prominent exit from the top 10 was litecoin (LTC). In July 2023, LTC held the tenth position. It has now dropped to 21st place. Its price declined from $95.18 per coin to $64.67.
The source also notes that in the earlier years of the crypto market, especially around 2013 and 2014, assets such as XRP and LTC were major challengers to BTC’s dominance. Litecoin held the second position for a considerable period, while XRP spent years in the third, fourth, and fifth spots. Today, XRP remains inside the top 10, but LTC is much farther from reclaiming its earlier status.
A market still defined by rotation
Viewed over a one-year period, the latest ranking changes suggest that the crypto market remains highly dynamic. The leading trio has stayed intact, but below them the order continues to rotate as investors reprice narratives, utility, adoption prospects, and momentum.
The strongest stories in this update are the persistence of BNB in fourth place, the sharp ascent of Solana into fifth, and the arrival of TON in the top 10. On the other side of the ledger, Litecoin’s slide from 10th to 21st underscores how quickly legacy assets can lose relative standing in a market that constantly rewards new attention and stronger performance.
Overall, the past year’s shifts do not represent a complete rewrite of the crypto hierarchy, but they do show that the battle for top-10 positions remains active. Established tokens still retain substantial market presence, yet newer or resurgent assets can rapidly move up the list when price momentum and investor interest align.
