From Copilot Assistance to Agent Autonomy
Cursor 2.0, released last October, shifted the service's core focus from "helping you write code" to "letting agents independently execute programming tasks." The mobile app is a natural extension: users can start new agent tasks on the phone or continue monitoring tasks initiated on the desktop. The earlier Copilot model required developers to actively write code with AI suggestions, necessitating multi-screen setups to view files, terminal output, and AI recommendations simultaneously. In agent mode, AI handles codebase reading, writing, and testing, reducing the human role to task delegation and quality assurance — deciding at critical junctures whether to proceed or revert changes.

This shift transforms the smartphone from an "impossible work device" into a "sufficient interface." An engineer's core tasks evolve from producing code to defining problems, reviewing outputs, and steering direction — activities a phone paired with a capable agent can handle in many scenarios.
