In the wake of the KelpDAO security incident that severely disrupted the DeFi ecosystem, Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance and Yield Basis, has called for the adoption of industry-wide safety standards. He pointed out that a recent wave of on-chain exploits has exposed a recurring weakness: over-reliance on centralized points of failure within systems presumed to be decentralized. Egorov urged the industry to shift from reactive fixes to preventive design.
Curve Founder: DeFi Needs Common Safety Standards
“All problems of this kind should be prevented before they occur. We should probably unite and develop safety standards for DeFi,” Egorov said, adding that critical dependencies should be distributed whenever possible. Where centralization cannot be eliminated, he argued, trust should be divided among multiple parties and backed by clearer best practices. Egorov called for coordinated action led by key ecosystem players, including the Ethereum and Solana Foundations, to establish common guidelines for building and verifying secure protocols. The goal would be a joint framework that developers, auditors and risk managers can follow. He noted that while smart contract audits have become standard, broader system design—including how external components are configured—remains inconsistent.
Industry Voices: Failures Are Part of Evolution
However, not all industry participants view recent incidents as signs of structural weakness. Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner at investment firm Dragonfly Capital, argued that failures have long been part of DeFi's development cycle. He pointed to past crises, including the Terra collapse and earlier market disruptions, as examples of how the ecosystem has adapted over time. “DeFi learns from failures. The important thing is that these failures are not fatal. The essence of DeFi is risk-averse and robust,” Qureshi said, drawing a parallel to traditional finance, which evolved through banking crises and market shocks. While losses can be significant, they are rarely existential for the system as a whole. Protocols are increasingly designed with safeguards such as over-collateralization and buffer reserves, helping to absorb stress events without triggering broader contagion.
KelpDAO Exploit Triggers DeFi Confidence Crisis
Reports indicate that the KelpDAO exploit resulted in direct losses exceeding $300 million, triggering massive withdrawals from the DeFi sector. Lending platform Aave was severely affected, and the total value locked (TVL) across the DeFi ecosystem plunged by $14.17 billion. The incident has reignited debates about the resilience of decentralized infrastructure. Investor confidence took a hit, with redemption runs further compressing market liquidity. While direct losses were contained, the TVL collapse underscores deeper concerns about reliability.
The contrast between Egorov's push for unified standards and Qureshi's evolutionary optimism highlights a fundamental tension in DeFi's growth. On one side, developers are pushing for higher standards and better coordination to reduce risk. On the other, investors view periodic disruptions as a natural part of innovation and refinement. What remains clear is that expectations are changing. As more institutional capital flows into decentralized markets, tolerance for preventable failures is declining. How the industry aligns around these principles will likely determine how DeFi matures in the coming years. As Qureshi put it, failures persist, but standards will rise as capital grows—this is the path from the “Wild West” to institutional legitimacy.
