Such a framework could give the industry a more coherent baseline for evaluating protocol safety. Today, smart contract audits are often treated as a proxy for security, but they do not always account for the full system architecture. External integrations, governance assumptions, upgrade mechanisms, oracle dependencies, and key management procedures can all introduce meaningful attack surfaces even when core contracts have been reviewed.

By advocating for common standards, Egorov is effectively arguing that DeFi needs a more mature operational layer. The issue is no longer just whether individual teams can ship audited code, but whether the sector can define and enforce a broader discipline around secure protocol design.

KelpDAO Shock Deepened Concerns Across the Sector

The push for stronger standards follows the KelpDAO exploit, which reportedly resulted in losses of more than $300 million. The incident did not remain isolated to one protocol. It triggered a wider wave of withdrawals across decentralized finance, contributing to a decline of $14.17 billion in total value locked across dozens of protocols.

The lending segment was among the areas hit hardest, and Aave was cited as one of the major protocols affected by the market disruption. The scale of the outflows underscored how quickly confidence can deteriorate when a major vulnerability shakes assumptions about protocol safety. Even in a sector designed around transparency and programmability, the effects of a single exploit can ripple far beyond the immediate target.

The KelpDAO event has therefore become more than a story about one exploit. It has emerged as a case study in how interconnected DeFi has become, and how weaknesses in protocol design, dependency management, or market structure can rapidly influence liquidity conditions across the ecosystem.

Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner at venture capital firm Dragonfly, argued that failures have long been part of DeFi’s development cycle. In his view, the more important question is not whether breakdowns happen, but whether they are survivable for the broader system.

Qureshi pointed to past crises, including the Terra collapse and earlier periods of market turmoil, as examples of how the ecosystem has repeatedly adapted under pressure. He argued that DeFi learns through failure, much as traditional finance evolved through banking crises and market shocks. Losses can be severe, but they are not necessarily existential for the system as a whole.

That perspective offers an important counterweight to the call for tighter standards. For many investors, repeated incidents do not automatically imply that DeFi is fundamentally broken. Instead, they are seen as part of an iterative process in which protocols become more resilient over time, especially as more capital, talent, and risk infrastructure enter the market.

Safeguards Are Improving, but Inconsistently

Qureshi also noted that many protocols are increasingly being designed with protective buffers such as overcollateralization and safety reserves. These mechanisms can help absorb shocks and reduce the risk that one protocol’s failure cascades into broader contagion. In that sense, the DeFi stack is not static; it is gradually incorporating lessons from past crises into protocol-level defenses.

Still, the key issue raised by Egorov is consistency. Some leading protocols may have robust safeguards, layered risk controls, and conservative economic assumptions, while others may remain vulnerable because of rushed integrations, concentrated admin controls, or insufficient attention to system-wide dependencies. As a result, the sector’s overall security posture can be only as strong as its weakest design assumptions.

This tension lies at the center of DeFi’s current stage of growth. Builders want higher standards and better coordination to reduce unnecessary risk. Investors, meanwhile, often accept periodic failures as part of a broader innovation cycle. Both views can be true at once: experimentation may be necessary, but preventable failures become less acceptable as the industry matures.

The Next Phase of DeFi May Depend on Trust Architecture

What remains clear is that expectations are changing. As more capital flows into decentralized markets, DeFi is under growing pressure to show that it can scale without repeatedly exposing users to avoidable operational weaknesses. The conversation is no longer only about decentralization in principle, but about how trust is actually distributed in practice.

Egorov’s comments highlight a likely turning point for the industry. If DeFi can align around common security principles, clearer trust models, and better coordination between major ecosystems, it may strengthen its credibility with both users and institutions. If it cannot, then every new exploit risks reinforcing the perception that the sector still lacks the discipline required for mainstream financial infrastructure.

The debate sparked by the KelpDAO incident therefore goes beyond one founder’s opinion or one protocol’s loss.
