Michael Egorov, founder of Curve Finance and Yield Basis, has urged the DeFi industry to adopt unified safety standards following a wave of on-chain exploits, particularly the KelpDAO incident that led to over $300 million in direct losses and a staggering $14.17 billion drop in total value locked (TVL) across the ecosystem.
The KelpDAO Exploit: Centralized Weaknesses Exposed
The KelpDAO vulnerability allowed attackers to drain more than $300 million in crypto assets. The ripple effect was immediate and severe: leading lending protocol Aave faced massive liquidations and withdrawal pressure, contributing to a total TVL decline of $14.17 billion within a short period. This incident highlights a recurring flaw in many DeFi systems—over-reliance on centralized points of failure within supposedly decentralized architectures.
Egorov emphasized that such attacks are not isolated but symptomatic of a broader design issue. “All problems of this kind should be prevented before they happen. We should probably unite and develop safety standards for DeFi,” he said. He argued that critical dependencies should be distributed whenever possible. Where centralization cannot be eliminated, trust should be split among multiple parties and backed by clearer best practices.
A Call for Industry-Wide Coordination
Egorov called on major ecosystem players—including the Ethereum and Solana foundations—to lead a coordinated effort in establishing common guidelines for building and verifying secure protocols. The goal is to create a shared framework that developers, auditors, and risk managers can follow. While smart contract audits have become standard, Egorov noted that broader system design, including how external components are configured, remains inconsistent across projects.
Investor Perspective: Failures as Learning Opportunities
Not everyone sees the recent incidents as a sign of structural weakness. Haseeb Qureshi, managing partner at Dragonfly, asserted that failures have long been part of DeFi’s development cycle. He pointed to past crises—such as the Terra collapse and earlier market disruptions—as examples of how the ecosystem adapts over time.
“DeFi learns from failures. The important thing is that these failures are not fatal. The essence of DeFi is risk-averse and robust,” Qureshi said, drawing a parallel to traditional finance, which evolved through bank runs and market shocks. He argued that while losses can be significant, they are rarely existential for the system as a whole. Many protocols are now designed with safeguards like over-collateralization and buffer reserves that help absorb stress events without triggering widespread contagion.
Debate Highlights Tension at Core of DeFi Growth
The ongoing debate reveals a fundamental tension: on one side, developers push for higher standards and better coordination to reduce risk; on the other, investors view periodic disruptions as a natural part of innovation and refinement. What remains clear is that expectations are shifting. As more institutional capital flows into decentralized markets, tolerance for preventable failures is decreasing. How the industry aligns on these principles will likely determine how DeFi matures in the years ahead.
