Dubai Interview: Responding to Five Key Issues
In a recent interview during a crypto industry summit in Dubai, Binance founder and former CEO Changpeng Zhao (CZ) addressed several prominent topics. Regarding the rumored $500 million investment by Elon Musk in his social platform X (formerly Twitter), CZ neither confirmed nor denied the details but noted that 'Musk's involvement in the crypto ecosystem is always valuable.' On the topic of U.S. regulatory penalties against Binance and himself, CZ admitted the 'cost was heavy' and acknowledged that his earlier 'ask for forgiveness, not permission' strategy had been overly aggressive. 'If I could do it over, I would have directly blocked U.S. users from the platform,' he said, to avoid the ensuing legal battles. When asked about his time in prison, CZ did not share specifics but said the experience forced him to reconsider corporate governance and compliance. He emphasized that Binance will now proactively embrace regulation rather than react to it.
Cryptocurrency as the Future Global Payment Infrastructure
CZ reiterated his long-standing belief that cryptocurrency is not merely a speculative asset but a foundational infrastructure for future global payments. 'Bitcoin and stablecoins will revolutionize cross-border remittances, micropayments, and financial inclusion,' he stated, citing use cases in Africa and Southeast Asia where traditional banking coverage remains inadequate. Despite short-term market volatility, CZ argued that the technological trend is irreversible and that crypto adoption will continue to accelerate as regulatory frameworks mature.
Greek MiCA License Rejection: A Lose-Lose Outcome
Commenting on the Greek regulator's recent refusal to grant Binance a license under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulation, CZ described it as 'a lose-lose situation for both sides.' He pointed out that Greece could have positioned itself as a leader in EU crypto regulation by hosting a compliant Binance, but the rejection limits local users' access to regulated services and may reduce Greece's competitiveness in the digital asset space. CZ stressed that Binance will continue working with regulators across EU member states to ensure compliant operations under MiCA, hinting that alternative jurisdictions are being evaluated for registration.
AI Tools and Code Security: Favoring the Free Version of Kimi
When asked about his personal go-to artificial intelligence tool, CZ revealed that 'the free version of Kimi is my most indispensable AI assistant.' He explained that Kimi excels in processing Chinese-language technical documents, generating code snippets, and assisting with security analyses, and that the free tier meets his daily needs. CZ also highlighted AI's enormous potential in enhancing smart contract code security, including automated detection of common vulnerabilities and logic errors. However, he cautioned that 'AI should not be given too much autonomy,' and developers must manually review AI-generated code to avoid introducing new risks. He believes the combination of AI and blockchain will create significant value in auditing, compliance, and user support areas.
