Danske Bank now lets clients trade Bitcoin and Ethereum ETPs through its platform without digital wallets. The bank warns of high volatility, labels products as opportunistic, and cites improved EU regulation (MiCA/MiFID II) as key enablers.

Danske Bank has launched direct crypto investment access for its clients. Through the bank's trading platform, users can buy and sell exchange-traded products (ETPs) tracking Bitcoin and Ethereum via Danske eBanking and Mobile Banking — no digital wallet required.

Clients Get Direct Access to Bitcoin and Ethereum ETPs

The ETPs track the two largest cryptocurrencies by market cap, giving exposure without the technical burden of managing private keys or wallets. Transactions occur within the bank's existing securities infrastructure, making the process familiar for traditional investors.

High Volatility Warning: Not a Long-Term Hold

Danske Bank explicitly cautions that cryptocurrencies carry extreme price swings that can lead to substantial losses. The bank views these ETPs as opportunistic rather than core long-term holdings, advising clients not to treat them as foundational portfolio components.

Client Demand and Regulatory Clarity Drive Launch

“As cryptocurrencies have become a more common asset class, we are receiving an increasing number of inquiries from customers wanting the option of investing in cryptocurrencies as part of their investment portfolio,” said Kerstin Lysholm, Head of Investment Products & Offering at Danske Bank.

Regulatory improvements also paved the way. EU frameworks including MiCA and MiFID II provide clearer guidelines for crypto-linked products, boosting investor confidence. Danske Bank believes the timing is right to offer regulated crypto ETPs.

Platform Expansion with No Advisory Service

The new offering adds to a platform that already hosts over 15,000 securities. The bank clarifies it does not provide advisory services for crypto investments — clients must make their own decisions. The ETPs target independent investors willing to accept high risks and seeking portfolio diversification without wallet hassles.
