DATA, an AI data company backed by Andreessen Horowitz (a16z), has introduced Trace, a provenance product designed to address unclear sourcing and repeat sales in AI training data. The tool creates a receipt when users upload video or audio files through partner data marketplaces, logging details such as submission time, contributor consent terms, and later licensing or payment events. According to DATA CEO Muttoni, the company’s data contribution platform Kled is currently adding 3 million to 4 million records per day, including historical entries that have been brought into the Trace system. DATA said the strategy was shaped in part by lessons from Poseidon, an AI data company it incubated, where the team found that buyers often struggled to verify whether purchased datasets were original, properly licensed, or exclusive.

Trace logs submission and licensing details

When users upload video or audio files through partner data marketplaces, Trace generates a receipt for each file. The receipt includes the submission time, the contributor’s consent terms, and details on later licensing or payment events.

DATA CEO Muttoni said the company’s data contribution platform, Kled, is currently adding 3 million to 4 million records daily. That figure includes historical records that have been incorporated into the Trace system.

Poseidon experience helped shape the strategy

DATA said part of the new strategy came from the experience of Poseidon, an AI data company it incubated. The team found that data buyers often had difficulty verifying whether the datasets they purchased were original, properly licensed, or exclusive.
