Binance Research has published a new report detailing April 2026 as one of the most disruptive months for decentralized finance (DeFi) in recent years. A series of major protocol exploits triggered a massive liquidity exodus, with total value locked (TVL) across all DeFi protocols plummeting by 10.7% month-over-month to $82.7 billion. The resulting outflows amounted to approximately $13 billion, marking a severe blow to the sector.

Record Exploit Losses

April saw exploit-related losses totaling $635.24 million, the highest monthly figure since the Bybit incident in February 2025. The two largest attacks targeted Drift Protocol and KelpDAO, with losses of roughly $285 million and $292 million respectively. Earlier reports linked these incidents to North Korea's Lazarus Group. Binance Research emphasized that modern DeFi risks extend beyond smart contract bugs, now encompassing social engineering, compromised systems, governance weaknesses, and bridge infrastructure failures.

Leverage Ratio Skyrockets

As liquidity fled, the on-chain leverage ratio surged to 38%, matching levels last seen in 2021. Critically, this increase reflects shrinking collateral rather than rising borrowing demand—outstanding debt declined more slowly than deposits, creating an imbalance. The firm warned that meaningful deleveraging has not yet occurred despite the broader crypto market pullback, leaving the system vulnerable with elevated leverage on a smaller collateral base.

Structural Shifts and Outlook

Despite the turmoil, certain lending segments continue to grow. Vault-style lending now accounts for nearly one-quarter of DeFi borrowing, up from nearly zero in 2024. However, April's events highlight how interconnected DeFi markets can rapidly transmit security shocks into liquidity crises, lending contractions, and leverage spikes. Investors should brace for potential cascading liquidations and further deleveraging risks in the months ahead.
