DeFi is not fading from relevance, according to crypto executives speaking at Consensus Miami 2026. Their argument was blunt: decentralized finance is moving closer to the financial mainstream, and the rise of AI agents is adding new momentum to that shift. Stablecoins, tokenized assets and DeFi were described as parts of the same broader transition in financial infrastructure.

Bitwise Asset Management co-founder and CEO Hunger Horsley said crypto is rushing into the mainstream, with DeFi included in that move. eToro co-founder and CEO Yoni Assia rejected the idea that DeFi is declining, calling it an inevitable future instead. He pointed to the scale already visible in onchain lending and smart-contract-based systems, saying lending markets hold $100 billion or more and that the underlying technology continues to prove itself in live conditions.

Security pressure remains after recent exploits

The discussion came only weeks after a string of DeFi exploits tied to North Korean hackers, including incidents involving Drift Protocol and Kelp DAO. Those attacks produced about $600 million in losses and renewed criticism of the sector’s security standards. Even so, panelists did not treat the breaches as evidence that DeFi is disappearing. They framed them as part of an industry whose systems are still being tested under real pressure.

Assia said the technology stack behind lending protocols and smart contracts is already operating at meaningful scale. That point ran through the panel: security failures are serious, but they do not settle the argument over whether DeFi has a future.

AI agents may need DeFi-like financial rails

A large share of the panel focused on AI agents and crypto-native financial infrastructure. a16z Crypto general partner Guy Wuollet said that if autonomous AI systems become economically important actors, they will need financial rails that are either directly DeFi or closely resemble it. The idea is simple. Machine-driven economic activity needs a system built for wallet-based, programmable and internet-native transactions.

Assia said he has been experimenting with AI agents that can independently open wallets, bridge assets, research trades and execute transactions across prediction markets and DeFi protocols. In his view, AI and DeFi are native to each other. Horsley compared DeFi’s function for AI agents to what APIs and open-source software became for the traditional internet, arguing that DeFi can act as the service layer for financial actions performed by AI systems.

Institutional interest is shifting toward compliant access

The panel also highlighted changing institutional behavior. Horsley said Bitwise, which manages roughly $15 billion in assets, is now getting requests from regulated fintech firms and neobanks that want compliant ways to offer DeFi-related products to customers. That suggests the conversation is moving away from whether institutions will engage with DeFi at all and toward how they can do it within regulatory boundaries.

Wuollet added that many large financial firms are looking at blockchain infrastructure for operational efficiency rather than pure crypto speculation. Finance, he said, is in the middle of a digital transformation, and institutions want to replace backend systems and core ledgers with blockchain-based infrastructure. The panel’s view was that the overlap between traditional finance, tokenized assets, DeFi and AI agents will keep expanding as institutions grow more comfortable operating onchain.
