Decentralized finance (DeFi) experienced a meteoric rise in August 2020, with total value locked (TVL) soaring 85% from $4.2 billion at the start of the month to $7.88 billion by August 30, according to DeFi Pulse. The figure inches ever closer to the $8 billion mark, reflecting an unprecedented influx of crypto capital into DeFi infrastructure.
Aave Becomes the New DeFi Leader, Surpassing Maker
Among the hundreds of DeFi protocols, Aave captured a 21.86% dominance of TVL, overtaking Maker, which had held 31.9% of the market on August 3. Aave's ascent was fueled by its flexible lending pools, flash loans, and aggressive liquidity incentives that attracted both retail and institutional depositors. Maker, the oldest and most established DeFi protocol, slipped to second place amid fierce competition from newer lending platforms.
YFI Token Soars: From Yield Farming to a $39K Stunner
Yearn Finance and its native token YFI were the headline grabbers of August. Yearn's automated yield optimization strategy—aggregating liquidity across protocols like Curve, Aave, and Compound—proved immensely popular among farmers seeking maximum returns. On the evening of August 29, YFI briefly peaked at $39,189, before retracing to around $30,000. Despite a dip to $27,000 over the weekend, YFI became the highest-priced cryptocurrency by unit value, surpassing even Bitcoin.
Decentralized Exchanges Hit $10.4 Billion Monthly Volume
DEX (decentralized exchange) platforms posted staggering growth. Data from Dune Analytics shows that global DEX trade volume over the past 30 days reached $10.42 billion, a 142% increase from the prior month. Uniswap maintained its dominance with 60% market share, followed by Curve (18.1%) and Balancer (8.9%). In the last seven days alone, DEX volume totaled $2.8 billion, with $699 million recorded on Sunday.
User Growth Accelerates: 32% Surge in Unique Addresses
The number of unique addresses interacting with DeFi applications rose from 293,475 on August 1 to 388,011 on August 29—a 32% increase. Uniswap led with roughly 72,624 unique traders in the past week, while other DEXs like IDEX (4,007), Kyber (3,424), Curve (1,330), 0x (556), and Bancor (520) also saw heightened activity. This growth signals that DeFi is transitioning from early adopters to a broader crypto audience.
Risks and Outlook: Rapid Expansion Meets Caution
While the numbers are impressive, the DeFi boom has not been without pitfalls. Several smart contract exploits, liquidity crises, and governance attacks occurred throughout August, reminding investors of the experimental nature of these protocols. Nevertheless, the sector's ability to double TVL in a single month and produce tokens like YFI with astronomical gains has ignited near-mania among crypto traders. As new protocols launch and traditional capital begins to explore DeFi, the coming months will test whether this growth trajectory is sustainable or if it represents a speculative bubble.
