The cryptocurrency market experienced a broad uptick in the first week of October 2021, with decentralized finance (DeFi) tokens and smart contract platforms posting significant gains. According to DeFi Llama data, the total value locked (TVL) in DeFi protocols surged to approximately $195 billion, marking a 14% increase from $171 billion recorded two weeks earlier.
Ethereum Maintains Dominance, BSC and Solana Trail
Despite ongoing concerns over high gas fees and network congestion, Ethereum remains the undisputed leader in DeFi with a TVL of $135.05 billion, representing 69.2% of the entire ecosystem. Binance Smart Chain (BSC) follows with $17.03 billion, which accounts for only 12.59% of Ethereum's TVL. Other notable blockchains include Solana ($11.5 billion), Terra ($10.07 billion), Polygon ($4.6 billion), Avalanche ($4 billion), Fantom ($2.31 billion), and Waves ($1.85 billion). Collectively, these seven alternative chains hold approximately 26.15% of the $195 billion TVL.
Top DeFi Protocols: Curve Leads, Multichain DEXs Gain Traction
Among individual protocols, Curve dominates with $14.71 billion TVL (7.52% share), closely followed by Aave at $14.65 billion. Curve is compatible with five blockchains, while Aave connects to three. In the decentralized exchange (DEX) category, Curve holds the top spot, followed by Sushiswap, PancakeSwap, Uniswap, Balancer, and Saber. Notably, Saber, PancakeSwap, and Uniswap are single-chain applications, whereas Sushiswap supports 13 blockchains and Balancer connects three.
The surge in TVL reflects growing investor confidence in DeFi despite market volatility. AXS gained 119.8% over the past seven days, driven by the popularity of Axie Infinity's play-to-earn model, while SHIB rose 92.3% fueled by meme coin speculation. Other double-digit gainers include QTUM (+42%), LUNA (+37%), BNB (+23%), SOL (+22%), AR, DYDX, HBAR, and VET.
As multi-chain DeFi ecosystems expand, Ethereum's dominance may face gradual erosion, but it still holds a commanding lead. Investors should monitor TVL shifts and protocol-level developments to navigate the evolving landscape.
