In January 2026, the global perpetual futures market saw a combined centralized and decentralized exchange (DEX) volume of $7.24 trillion, with DEX platforms contributing a record $739.48 billion — representing a 19.2% market share. This marks a dramatic increase from roughly 6% in early 2024, underscoring a structural shift in crypto derivatives trading.
Record Growth in DEX Perpetual Trading
According to a CoinGecko report, DEX perpetual futures processed approximately $6.7 trillion in cumulative trading volume in 2025 — a 346% jump from $1.5 trillion in 2024. Monthly volumes regularly exceeded $1 trillion, and daily activity in early 2026 has peaked between $7 billion and $8 billion. Leading platforms such as Hyperliquid, Aster, and Lighter accounted for a growing share, reflecting intensifying competition among onchain venues.
Momentum carried into Q1 2026. Combined CEX and DEX perpetual volume reached $7.24 trillion in January, up 75% from January 2024. Of that, DEX platforms contributed $739.48 billion — roughly eightfold growth compared to the same period two years earlier. While DEX market share dipped slightly month-over-month due to broader market conditions, the year-over-year increase remains pronounced.
Key Drivers: Better Execution, Incentives, Infrastructure
Improved execution quality has been a primary adoption driver. Onchain orderbooks, upgraded oracle systems, and low-fee structures have reduced latency and slippage, making DEX trading more competitive. Some platforms charge taker fees as low as 0.035%, alongside revenue-sharing and token buyback mechanisms designed to boost user returns.
Liquidity incentives have also played a major role. Airdrops, points programs, and liquidity provider rewards have attracted traders seeking yield and self-custody. New entrants like Aster and Lighter have used these strategies to compete directly with CEX promotions, accelerating capital inflows into decentralized markets.
At the infrastructure level, blockchain upgrades have reduced friction for high-frequency trading. Solana's Alpenglow consensus overhaul delivers transaction finality in roughly 100 to 150 milliseconds, a substantial improvement. On Ethereum, the Pectra upgrade and planned improvements such as PeerDAS aim to enhance scalability, reduce fees, and improve layer-2 interoperability, making onchain trading more efficient.
Platform Landscape and Outlook
Leading platforms continue to consolidate their positions. Hyperliquid recorded approximately $2.9 trillion in trading volume in 2025 and has maintained a dominant share into 2026. Solana-based protocols like Drift and Jupiter Perps have benefited from network performance improvements.
Despite rapid growth, centralized exchanges still command the majority of derivatives volume — an estimated 80% to 90% market share. However, the steady rise of DEX participation suggests that onchain perpetuals are becoming a core component of digital asset market infrastructure rather than a fringe alternative. Analysts describe the trend as a structural shift, and with continued technological advancement and UX improvements, DEX market share in perpetuals is expected to grow further.
