The cryptocurrency market witnessed an extraordinary rally on Tuesday as the meme-based asset Dogecoin (DOGE) surged over 40% in 24 hours, hitting a new all-time high of $0.57. Its market capitalization soared past $71 billion, overtaking the valuation of Honda Motor Company and securing the fourth-largest position among all cryptocurrencies with over 9,000 assets.
Unstoppable Gains: DOGE Eats into Bitcoin Dominance
Dogecoin's market cap now represents 3% of the entire crypto economy, slowly eroding Bitcoin’s dominance. In the past week, DOGE gained 97% against the U.S. dollar and 51% against Ethereum (ETH). The monthly figures are even more staggering: a 944% gain against USD and over 1,000% against Bitcoin in the last 30 days. Over a 90-day period, DOGE has soared 1,508% against USD and more than 900% against BTC.
Global trading volume for DOGE reached $15.91 billion on Tuesday morning. The token is currently changing hands between $0.48 and $0.553, slightly off its intraday peak.
Elon Musk Effect and Inflationary Supply Debate
The rally was largely fueled by Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s tweet about hosting Saturday Night Live on May 8, dubbing himself the “Dogefather.” The social media hype has driven retail interest, with #hodl and related hashtags trending. Konstantin Boyko-Romanovsky, CEO of Allnodes, commented: “Dogecoin continues to defy expectations. The hype from celebrities like Elon Musk and Mark Cuban is a key driver. Its inflationary supply makes it affordable, which appeals to the general public.”
Unlike Bitcoin’s deflationary model, Dogecoin has a circulating supply of approximately 129.46 billion DOGE and adds new coins each year. Mark Cuban sees this as an advantage for payments, calling it a “digital version of the U.S. dollar.” The low price per coin (under $0.60) reduces psychological barriers for new investors.
Whale Concentration: A Hidden Risk
Despite the euphoria, on-chain data reveals a significant concentration risk. A single address holds 36.71 billion DOGE, accounting for over 28.38% of the total supply. This makes it the wealthiest Dogecoin holder by far. Any large transfer from this whale could trigger severe volatility.
Analysts warn that while meme coins can continue to rally on social media momentum and celebrity endorsements, their lack of fundamental value and extreme speculation pose high risks. Investors are advised to exercise caution as the party may not last forever.
As of press time, Dogecoin’s 30-day gain exceeds 1,000%, marking one of the most dramatic surges in crypto history—a testament to the power of internet culture and community hype.
