The popular meme-based cryptocurrency Dogecoin (DOGE) has experienced an incredible rally in the past 24 hours, jumping over 40% from around $0.40 to an all-time high of $0.57. This surge pushed Dogecoin's market capitalization to over $71 billion, capturing 3% of the entire crypto economy and making it the fourth-largest cryptocurrency globally, surpassing the valuation of traditional companies like Honda Motor Company.
Stellar Performance and Market Impact
Dogecoin's gains have been staggering across multiple timeframes. In the last 24 hours alone, DOGE appreciated 41% against Bitcoin (BTC) and 51% against Ethereum (ETH) over the past week. Over a 30-day period, the meme coin skyrocketed 944% against the U.S. dollar and over 1,000% against Bitcoin. The 90-day statistics are even more impressive: a 1,508% gain versus the USD and more than 900% against BTC. Global DOGE trading volume reached $15.91 billion as of Tuesday morning (ET).
The rally is also eroding Bitcoin's market dominance. While Bitcoin is often considered deflationary, Dogecoin's inflationary supply and low unit price have attracted massive retail interest. Currently, there are approximately 129.46 billion DOGE in circulation, with the largest single address holding 36.71 billion coins—28.38% of the total supply.
Market Sentiment and Celebrity Influence
This surge is closely tied to Elon Musk's tweets. Last week, Musk posted “Dogefather SNL May 8,” hinting at his upcoming appearance on Saturday Night Live and asking fans for skit ideas. The social media buzz has fueled speculative demand. Konstantin Boyko-Romanovsky, CEO and Founder of Allnodes, commented: “Dogecoin continues to defy expectations within the crypto market. A key factor is the hype from celebrities like Elon Musk and Mark Cuban. With its inflationary supply and low price, Dogecoin appeals to the general public as a payment alternative. A $60,000 Bitcoin may be intimidating, while Doge feels more like digital USD.” As of press time, DOGE was trading between $0.48 and $0.553, slightly off its peak. Whether this rally can sustain remains to be seen amid evolving market sentiment and potential regulatory scrutiny.
