DogeOS has launched a public Ethereum-compatible testnet for Dogecoin, allowing developers to build trading, lending and stablecoin applications with test DOGE. The effort is meant to move DOGE beyond a token that mostly sits idle in wallets and into more active use cases.
According to materials the DogeOS team provided to CoinDesk, the testnet went live on Wednesday. Developers can build with familiar tools, transaction fees are paid in test DOGE, and projects already under development include lending services, trading venues and crypto-backed stablecoins.
DogeOS puts applications on a separate system
The report says DOGE has a market capitalization of about $13 billion, making it one of the larger cryptocurrencies by value, yet most tokens still do little more than remain in wallets. Applications that let holders lend, borrow or trade DOGE are being pitched as a way to give the token a use case beyond price speculation.
Dogecoin itself handles one job: transferring DOGE. It does not natively run lending protocols or exchanges. DogeOS places those applications on a separate system, and users move DOGE across chains to use them. That setup means users must trust the system to keep an honest ledger.
The first version still relies on chosen operators
DogeOS says it wants to support that trust with mathematical proofs and, over time, have the Dogecoin network verify them directly. For now, though, the first version depends on operators and hardware selected by the team. Authorized sequencers determine transaction ordering, validator nodes check proofs inside trusted execution environments, or TEEs, and a Security Council provides oversight.
In practical terms, users still have to trust those operators and the hardware stack to function correctly. Dogecoin miners are not yet involved in validating application proofs.
Miner verification depends on OP_CHECKZKP
DogeOS plans to hand that role to miners through an upgrade to Dogecoin Core. The proposal, called OP_CHECKZKP, was published in July 2025 and would add rules enabling computers on the Dogecoin network to verify proofs for computations performed elsewhere.
But the report notes that the implementation submitted in December of the same year is still a draft. The proof checker remains a placeholder, and more development is needed before the upgrade could be activated. No date has been given for a DogeOS mainnet launch, and no activation date has been announced for the upgrade either.
The team argues DOGE needs a stronger holding case
DogeOS was created by the team behind the Dogecoin wallet MyDoge. Founder Jordan Jefferson said buying DOGE is already easy, but attracting institutional investors requires a stronger reason to hold it, especially after Bitwise said it would shut down its Dogecoin ETF.
The article says three U.S. Dogecoin ETFs pulled in only about $12 million combined over nearly the past 10 months. Out of 199 trading days, 166 recorded zero net inflows. When Bitwise announced the closure, its fund had less than $700,000 in assets.
Jefferson said, 「No other digital asset has Dogecoin’s liquidity, community and cultural reach, and its potential has barely been tapped. With DogeOS, developers can finally build applications on Dogecoin, and through the MyDoge wallet, those apps can reach users from day one.」
He added, 「The community has chanted ‘DOGE to $1’ for years. A real economy built on Dogecoin is the path to get there.」
Earlier meme-coin app networks struggled to hold traction
Past attempts to bring applications to meme-coin ecosystems have not produced strong long-term results. Dogechain launched in 2022 with a similar pitch, letting DOGE holders move tokens onto another network for token trading and financial applications. The report says it drew about $4.6 million in deposits within days, but DeFiLlama now tracks less than $300 remaining in financial apps there.
Shiba Inu’s ecosystem followed in 2023 with Shibarium. The report puts the current size of tracked financial applications at about $140,000, down sharply from a peak of around $6.4 million.
Support and architecture set DogeOS apart, but key questions remain
The report says DogeOS differs from Dogechain in both backing and technical direction. The Dogecoin Foundation had distanced itself from Dogechain, while Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing endorsed DogeOS in its launch announcement, calling it a way to add applications without changing Dogecoin’s base layer.
Even so, DogeOS still needs the OP_CHECKZKP upgrade to be completed before it can tie security to Dogecoin miners. That work has not moved beyond the draft stage.
Based on the historical record cited in the article, many meme-coin app chains have followed the same pattern: a spike in total value locked, then a steep drop. For DogeOS, the immediate hurdle is trust. Its first version is permissioned, with ordering, validation and oversight all handled by operators and hardware chosen by one team. Until OP_CHECKZKP moves from draft to activation, the decentralization case remains unfinished.
