According to a report by The Information on Tuesday, food delivery giant DoorDash is planning to give its Dasher drivers the option to receive payments in stablecoins via Tempo, a payments-focused blockchain developed by Stripe and Paradigm. Fortune later confirmed the news, noting that Tempo has launched a stablecoin advisory unit to help businesses integrate stablecoin infrastructure, with DoorDash as one of its early partners.
Partnership Details and Tempo Background
DoorDash has been a Tempo design partner since the blockchain's public announcement in September 2025, with contractor and driver payouts identified as a primary use case from the start. Tempo raised $500 million in Series A funding in October 2025 at a $5 billion valuation, backed by Greenoaks, Thrive Capital, and Sequoia. Its mainnet launched in March 2026 alongside a Machine Payments Protocol aimed at AI agent transactions. The network is built specifically for stablecoin payments and real-world settlement with no trading or speculative functionality, targeting over 100,000 TPS with sub-second finality. Gas fees and transfers can be paid in any stablecoin, including USDC and USDT, through a built-in automated market maker that remains issuer-neutral.
Benefits for Drivers and the Platform
For Dashers, stablecoin payouts would mean near-instant settlement in seconds rather than the one-to-three business days typical of ACH bank transfers, while eliminating or sharply reducing processing fees. Drivers in regions with limited banking access or currency instability would gain a more direct way to receive earnings. For DoorDash, the move cuts payout processing costs and provides a competitive edge in recruiting drivers in a crowded gig market. The company already offers financial tools through its Dasher Crimson product, making stablecoin payouts a natural extension of its existing infrastructure.
Roll-out Timeline Uncertain
No official rollout date has been confirmed. The report did not specify which stablecoin(s) will be available at launch, whether the rollout will begin as a pilot, or which countries will be included first. Given Stripe's close relationship with Circle, USDC is a likely candidate, though Tempo's stablecoin-neutral design leaves options open. Tempo's website has highlighted “seamless contractor and driver payouts worldwide” as a specific use case tied to DoorDash since the project's 2025 launch. The new stablecoin advisory unit, staffed by a small team of engineers, provides direct integration support to partner companies.
Industry Impact and Regulatory Considerations
The broader adoption will depend on how smoothly DoorDash guides drivers through wallet setup, tax implications, and everyday use. Regulatory requirements around crypto payroll vary by state and country, shaping the opt-in process. Visa, Shopify, and several major banks are also building on Tempo, making the DoorDash integration part of a wider push by established companies to settle real-world transactions on stablecoin rails. DoorDash co-founder and CTO Andy Fang commented in a Tempo blog post: “Global payments is complex in terms of what the requirements are for any different country. Figuring out a way to provide solutions to the end customer that feel frictionless, while integrating with rails that are dynamic enough to handle the different requirements of different countries, is at the heart of the complexity.” Further details are expected once DoorDash confirms a rollout plan via its Dasher portal and Tempo's official channels.
