Blockchain investigator Zachxbt posted on X (formerly Twitter) that approximately 4,800 bitcoins (worth about $144 million) originating from the now-defunct darknet marketplace Abraxas were moved to a bitcoin mixing service. The coins had been sitting dormant since the market's exit scam in November 2015.
Funds Awaken After Eight Years of Silence
“An entity moved ~4800 BTC ($144M) originating from Abraxas darknet market which exit scammed in Nov 2015 after previously sitting dormant,” the analyst said on Monday. “They consolidated funds and also deposited [them into] a bitcoin mixer,” Zachxbt added. Mixers are used to obscure the transaction trail, enhancing privacy but also frequently associated with money laundering. When Abraxas defrauded its customers and vendors, bitcoin was trading at only $386 per coin, meaning the stolen stash was worth about $1.85 million at the time. The more than 77-fold increase in bitcoin's price has turned that loot into a fortune.
The History of Abraxas Darknet Market
Abraxas launched on December 13, 2014, roughly at the same time as notorious darknet marketplaces AlphaBay and Agora. However, it operated for less than a year. According to data from gwern.net, the site became inaccessible on November 5, 2015, and its bitcoin wallets were emptied in March 2016. The exit scam left vendors and users frantically looking for alternative platforms. Unfortunately, several new markets also defrauded users during the migration. Eventually, many users moved to AlphaBay, which became the leading darknet marketplace until it was seized by law enforcement in July 2017.
Massive Value Appreciation Sparks Movement
From the time of the Abraxas scam to the present, bitcoin's price has surged from $386 to around $30,000 (as of October 2023)—a gain of over 7,700%. This means the 4,800 BTC are now valued at more than $144 million. The reason for the sudden movement after years of dormancy remains unknown, except for the fact that the funds are now worth $142 million more than they were in 2015. Speculation includes potential liquidation, distribution among participants, or further obfuscation.
Market Implications and Ongoing Monitoring
This incident has drawn attention from the crypto community and possibly law enforcement. The use of a mixer makes tracking the funds more challenging, but onchain analysts are monitoring the next steps. The case serves as a reminder that old darknet loot can resurface during extreme market conditions, potentially impacting exchanges and price dynamics. Whether the coins will be flagged or frozen by major platforms remains to be seen.
