DuckDuckGo saw a clear spike in US demand after Google unveiled a broad AI overhaul of Search. Data released by the company on May 27 showed that from May 20 to May 25, average US app installs rose 18.1% from the prior week, with a single-day peak of 30.5% on May 25. On iOS, the move was sharper: average installs climbed 33%, and the daily peak reached 69.9%.
Install growth came alongside a rise in AI-free search traffic
The shift followed Google I/O 2026, where Google announced one of the biggest interface changes in the history of Search and introduced more AI agent features. Criticism around the update focused on two points. Some users and commentators argued that AI Overviews often return wrong answers. Others objected to something more basic: users losing direct control over how search works.
DuckDuckGo reported a second jump at the same time. Traffic to noai.duckduckgo.com, its AI-free search page that filters out AI-generated material and shows standard web index results, increased 22.7% on a weekly average basis during the same period. The single-day peak hit 27.7% on May 24. Taken together, the numbers point to two related behaviors. Some users appear to be moving away from Google, while others are leaning harder into a version of search with no AI layer in the results page.
DuckDuckGo says the argument is about choice, not rejecting AI
CEO Gabriel Weinberg said Google is “force-feeding AI” and offering no opt-out, adding that search quality is getting worse. His framing was direct: DuckDuckGo wants to be the option that lets users decide how much AI they want.
That does not mean the company is positioning itself as anti-AI. Duck.ai, its free AI chat product that does not require registration, currently supports Claude 4.5 Haiku, Llama 4 Scout, Mistral Small 3 24B, and GPT-5 mini, with the model list continuing to change. According to the company, user IP addresses are stripped before requests reach model providers, chat records are deleted within 30 days, and conversations are not used for model training.
DuckDuckGo also offers Search Assist, which places AI summaries at the top of results, and AI Image Filter, a tool for filtering AI-generated images. Executive Kamyl Bazbaz used almost the same language in the company’s announcement: people want choice. The dispute is not simply whether AI belongs in search. It is about who controls the off switch.
Google’s redesign has also reopened questions about filtering and visibility
