The European Central Bank has opened a new application round for its digital euro innovation platform, according to Cointelegraph. The initiative invites fintech firms, payment providers, and other organizations to explore how AI agents could take part in digital euro payments. The program has two tracks: a hands-on testing phase and a workshop stream focused on future use cases. The testing phase is scheduled for January through June 2027, when participants will build prototypes for features including electronic receipts, multi-party transactions, and conditional payments. Separately, the ECB has already selected 36 banks and payment institutions, including Revolut, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank, for another 12-month digital euro pilot set to begin in the second half of 2027. The report added that any final issuance of the digital euro still depends on European Union legislation and a later decision by the ECB.

The European Central Bank has opened a new round of applications for its digital euro innovation platform, according to Cointelegraph. The ECB is inviting fintech companies, payment institutions, and other organizations to explore the use of AI agents in digital euro payments.

Program split into testing and workshop tracks

The initiative will run across two parts: practical testing and discussions on future applications.

The testing phase is scheduled for January to June 2027. Participants will build prototypes for functions such as electronic receipts, multi-party transactions, and conditional payments.

The workshop track will examine AI payments, micropayments, machine-to-machine transactions, and the use of the digital euro in public services.

Separate 12-month pilot to start in H2 2027

The ECB has also selected 36 banks and payment institutions for another digital euro pilot that will run for 12 months. Participants include Revolut, Stripe, and Deutsche Bank. That pilot is set to begin in the second half of 2027.

The digital euro still requires European Union legislation and a subsequent ECB decision before any final issuance can move ahead.
