El Salvador has once again grabbed headlines with a major shuffle of its bitcoin holdings. The National Bitcoin Office (ONBTC) announced Friday that the country's strategic bitcoin reserve of 6,285 BTC (worth approximately $683 million) would be split into several addresses, each containing 500 BTC, citing the need to guard against potential quantum computing threats.

Official Explanation: Security Upgrade Against Quantum Threats

ONBTC explained on social media that moving funds to fresh addresses prevents public key exposure. “Once funds are spent from an address, its public keys are revealed and vulnerable. By splitting funds into smaller amounts, the impact of a potential quantum attack is minimized,” the office stated. It also promised a public dashboard with each address to “maintain transparency without address reuse, enhancing security.”

While most experts believe bitcoin remains safe from quantum attacks for the foreseeable future, El Salvador chose an abundance of caution.

Analyst Suspicion: A Prelude to a Dump

The sudden move, however, has sparked skepticism among market analysts. Jacob King, CEO of Whalewire, called the justification “laughable and a terrible lie,” suggesting the Salvadoran government is preparing an exit. “Fresh wallets make it cleaner to deal with OTC desks and exchanges, letting them unload in tranches without drawing as much heat,” he assessed, branding the nation's bitcoin play a “stunt.”

El Salvador has been buying bitcoin since adopting it as legal tender in 2021, often defying IMF warnings. If the analysts are right, a large-scale selloff could temporarily pressure the market. ONBTC, however, insists the move is purely for security and has not disclosed any sales plan. The market now watches for further transparency from the Bitcoin Office.
