El Salvador officially launched Bitcoin Diploma 2.0 on Feb. 24, moving bitcoin and financial literacy into the country’s public education system. The program requires three hours per week in public schools and includes the deployment of Grok AI tutors in 5,000 schools.

The initiative was introduced by El Salvador’s National Bitcoin Office, or ONBTC, under the direction of Stacy Herbert. Unlike the earlier pilot version, the new program comes with printed textbooks distributed across the national public school network. Bitcoin education is now being folded into the framework of social studies and mathematics rather than treated as a separate experiment.

Curriculum reaches beyond bitcoin basics

The reported course content covers the Lightning Network, the nature of money, the history of central banks, and core principles of free-market economics. Teaching materials were upgraded from the 2024 pilot, “What Is Money?”, with visual tools such as 3D charts and real-world examples used to explain concepts including hash rate, difficulty adjustment, and the UTXO model.

According to the report, the material is designed so even young students can grasp difficult ideas. Concepts usually seen as technical are being adapted into classroom content that children as young as 7 years old can follow.

Grok AI tutors become part of the school rollout

A second major element of the reform is the national deployment of Grok AI tutor systems. The report describes this as part of a broader “Bitcoin + AI” strategy aimed at raising youth productivity. Students are also expected to learn about so-called agentic financial tools and how to interact with autonomous AI agents and decentralized payment systems.

That gives the program a wider scope than standard financial education. It connects bitcoin instruction with digital payments and AI-based tools inside the classroom.

Program advances while IMF pressure continues

The curriculum was launched while El Salvador remains under a $1.4 billion financing framework with the International Monetary Fund. Although the IMF has continued pressing the country to scale back its bitcoin agenda, the Bukele government has kept moving ahead. The report says the government’s bitcoin holdings have now exceeded 7,500 BTC.

ONBTC has framed its 2026 education agenda as a pillar of “monetary sovereignty,” arguing that a population trained in decentralized finance can serve as a buffer against external economic shocks. The report adds that critics have pointed to the crypto downturn at the start of 2026 as a warning sign, while the government views the current market phase as one of “tactical accumulation.” The first Bitcoin Diploma 2.0 graduates are expected to enter the economy later this year.
