Tesla CEO Elon Musk has once again voiced strong support for Dogecoin (DOGE), emphasizing the unique advantages of its base-layer optimization strategy. In a recent tweet, Musk noted that Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) are pursuing multi-layer transaction systems, but their base layers suffer from slow transaction rates and high costs. In contrast, Dogecoin focuses on maximizing base-layer transaction speed and minimizing transaction costs, with exchanges acting as a de facto secondary layer. Musk stated, “There is merit [IMO] to Doge maximizing base layer transaction rate and minimizing transaction cost.”
Context and Dogecoin Upgrade
Musk's comments came in response to a tweet by prominent Dogecoin YouTuber Matt Wallace, who reminded the community that the Dogecoin upgrade is coming soon, positioning DOGE as one of the most used currencies globally. Musk replied, echoing his earlier statement from June 27 that it was “important to support” the upgrade. Dogecoin core developer Patrick Lodder and core maintainer Michi Lumin, along with their team, have been coding the upgrade. The new fee structure proposed includes: lowering the minimum relay fee to 0.001 DOGE, lowering the dust limit to 0.01 DOGE, setting the default block inclusion fee rate to 0.01 DOGE, restoring a functional free transaction space, and lowering the default fee rate to 0.01 DOGE. These changes aim to give miners more control over transaction inclusion and enhance network sovereignty.
Current Dogecoin Transaction Fees
As of now, sending a Dogecoin transaction costs approximately 0.0052 DOGE per byte, translating to about 2.13 DOGE per transaction ($0.454 at current prices). During the first week of May, transaction fees peaked at $2.37 per transfer, when DOGE prices were significantly higher. Musk has previously expressed a desire for 10x faster block times and 100x lower fees, and the proposed upgrade moves toward that goal.
Community Reactions and Alternative Chains
Musk's tweet sparked a wave of suggestions from crypto enthusiasts. Some recommended Solana (SOL) as a blockchain already achieving high throughput and low costs. Software developer Patrick Dugan countered that Dogecoin's Proof-of-Work (PoW) mining has the advantage of amortizing solar and battery installations. Lightning Network supporters, including Udi Wertheimer, tried to convince Musk to look into LN. Bitcoin Cash (BCH) advocates chimed in, stating “BCH is already doing it… sound electronic cash for everyone.” Other suggestions included Paul Sztorc's Drivechain (BIPs 300+301) and the Stacks protocol, which Louis Ivan Valencia described as adding scalability and smart contract functionality to Bitcoin without modifying it. Despite these alternatives, Musk's focus remains on Dogecoin's base-layer strategy.
Musk's latest remarks reinforce Dogecoin's niche in the crypto ecosystem: a simple, low-cost base-layer design optimized for payments. As the upgrade rolls out, Dogecoin could become an even more efficient medium of exchange, challenging the multi-layer models of Bitcoin and Ethereum.
