Elon Musk has once again put Dogecoin at the center of the scalability debate. In a public response to discussion around an upcoming Dogecoin update, the Tesla CEO said there is “merit” to a model in which Dogecoin improves transaction throughput directly on the base layer while pushing costs lower, rather than relying primarily on the kind of multilayer transaction architecture associated with Bitcoin and Ethereum. His remarks arrived as Dogecoin developers were preparing a set of software changes to be introduced gradually across multiple releases.
Musk contrasts Dogecoin with Bitcoin and Ethereum
The latest exchange began after crypto commentator Matt Wallace posted that a Dogecoin upgrade was approaching and could help position DOGE as one of the world’s most widely used currencies. Musk replied that BTC and ETH are pursuing multilayer transaction systems, but that their base-layer transaction speed is slow and transaction costs are high. In his view, Dogecoin may have an advantage if it focuses on maximizing base-layer transaction rate and minimizing transaction cost, with exchanges effectively serving as a secondary layer in practice.
The statement was consistent with Musk’s earlier comments on Dogecoin’s technical direction. In late June, he had already said it was important to support the Dogecoin upgrade. For Musk, the appeal of Dogecoin has long been tied to a simple consumer-facing payments narrative: a network that is fast enough, cheap enough, and easy enough to support broad everyday use. That framing stands in contrast to more complex scaling roadmaps that separate settlement, execution, and payment traffic across multiple layers.
Developers work on a multi-release fee update
At the time of Musk’s comments, Dogecoin core developer Patrick Lodder and core maintainer Michi Lumin were working with a team preparing the upgrade. The changes were not described as a one-off overhaul, but rather as improvements to be deployed gradually over multiple software releases. The proposal focused heavily on fee policy and transaction relay behavior, areas that are central to Dogecoin’s viability as a low-cost payment network.
According to the proposed fee structure, the changes were meant to move more decision-making power over transaction inclusion back to miners instead of leaving that process too dependent on the relay network. The proposal also aimed to increase configurability for fee-related parameters, giving individual node operators and the broader community more autonomy over how the network handles transactions.
The listed changes included several concrete targets: lowering the minimal relay fee to 0.001 DOGE, reducing the dust limit to 0.01 DOGE, setting the default block inclusion fee rate to 0.01 DOGE, bringing back a functional free transaction space, and lowering the default fee rate to 0.01 DOGE. Together, these measures pointed toward a cheaper and more flexible fee market, one designed to support smaller-value transactions more efficiently.
Lower fees were central to Musk’s vision
Musk’s support for the fee update did not appear in isolation. Earlier in May, he had said he hoped to see Dogecoin achieve 10x faster block times and 100x lower fees. The fee debate mattered because transaction costs on the network had already become a noticeable issue during periods of heavy activity. At the time referenced in the report, the cost to send DOGE stood at 0.0052 DOGE per byte, translating to roughly 2.13 DOGE per transaction, or about $0.454. During the first week of May, Dogecoin transaction fees had reportedly climbed as high as $2.37 per transfer.
For a cryptocurrency often promoted as an internet-native payment asset, those numbers were significant. While still lower than peak congestion levels seen on some other chains, they were high enough to undermine Dogecoin’s image as an ultra-cheap medium of exchange, especially for small payments, tipping, and casual peer-to-peer transfers. That made fee reductions more than a technical tweak; they became part of a broader argument about what Dogecoin is supposed to be.
The wider crypto community pushed alternative solutions
Musk’s comments quickly drew reactions from across the crypto ecosystem. Some users argued that the design goals he described were already being pursued elsewhere. One response bluntly suggested that what Musk wanted was Solana, a blockchain associated with high throughput. Others encouraged him to look at the Lightning Network, long promoted as Bitcoin’s answer to fast and inexpensive payments. Still others pointed to Stacks, Drivechain, or Bitcoin Cash as examples of networks or frameworks that already addressed similar concerns.
These replies reflected a familiar divide in crypto infrastructure strategy. One side favors scaling primarily at the base layer by increasing raw network capacity and reducing direct transaction costs. The other side sees layered systems as more sustainable, keeping the base chain relatively conservative while shifting payment volume, smart contract logic, or specialized activity to second layers, sidechains, or adjacent protocols.
Supporters of the Lightning Network used Musk’s comments as an opportunity to argue that Bitcoin already has a path for low-cost payments, even if adoption has not matched the ambitions of its advocates. Bitcoin Cash supporters, meanwhile, responded by claiming that BCH was already doing what Musk described: functioning as low-fee electronic cash. Representatives and community members linked to Stacks and other projects likewise argued that the industry had been innovating around these tradeoffs for years, and that many of Musk’s desired features were already available in one form or another.
Dogecoin’s identity remains tied to payments
Despite the competing recommendations, Musk’s position highlighted something important about Dogecoin’s market identity. He was not presenting DOGE as the most sophisticated smart contract platform, nor as a settlement asset for a complex stack of financial applications. Instead, he was emphasizing a simpler proposition: a cryptocurrency that works efficiently at the base layer for regular transactions. That focus aligns with the long-running view among many Dogecoin supporters that the network’s biggest opportunity lies in usability and cost efficiency rather than technical complexity.
Whether that vision can be realized depends on execution. Reducing fee defaults and relay thresholds may help, but sustaining low fees over time requires a network design that can handle demand without sacrificing reliability or decentralization. Those tradeoffs are exactly why the broader market continues to debate base-layer scaling versus multilayer approaches. Musk’s intervention did not settle that debate, but it did give Dogecoin fresh visibility in it.
Why the remarks still matter
Musk’s influence in crypto has often been polarizing, but his comments tend to amplify whichever project or design question he chooses to discuss. In this case, he redirected attention to a core issue that remains unresolved across the industry: should blockchains seek mass-market utility by making the base chain itself fast and cheap, or should they preserve the base layer and move most activity elsewhere?
Dogecoin’s planned upgrade gave that question a concrete near-term context. The network was not merely the subject of theoretical praise; its developers were actively working on changes intended to reduce costs and improve transaction handling. If those adjustments succeed, they could strengthen the case for Dogecoin as a payment-focused asset with a straightforward architecture. If they fall short, critics will likely continue to argue that other ecosystems already offer more mature solutions.
For now, Musk’s message was clear: there is, in his opinion, genuine value in a blockchain that does not overcomplicate the path to payments. In a market crowded with multilayer roadmaps, Dogecoin’s attempt to improve the base layer itself remains one of the more distinctive narratives attached to the asset.
