Elon Musk has once again inserted himself into the debate over blockchain scalability, this time by arguing that Dogecoin’s design may benefit from prioritizing the base layer rather than relying heavily on layered transaction architectures. In response to a social media post about an upcoming Dogecoin software upgrade, Musk said that while Bitcoin and Ethereum are pursuing multilayer transaction systems, their base layers remain relatively slow and expensive. In his view, there is merit to Dogecoin maximizing base-layer transaction rate and minimizing transaction costs, with exchanges potentially serving as a de facto secondary layer.
A familiar position from Musk on Dogecoin
The remarks were consistent with Musk’s earlier public support for changes to the Dogecoin network. On June 27, he had already said it was “important to support” the Dogecoin upgrade. At the development level, Dogecoin core developer Patrick Lodder and core maintainer Michi Lumin were described as working with a broader team to prepare the changes, which were expected to be rolled out gradually across multiple software releases.
The discussion emerged after a prominent Dogecoin-focused content creator, Matt Wallace, said the update was coming soon and would help position Dogecoin to become one of the most widely used currencies in the world. Musk’s reply reframed the issue around network architecture: rather than following the dominant narrative that scaling should increasingly be handled by secondary layers, he suggested that improving the chain’s own throughput and fee structure may be a worthwhile path for Dogecoin.
What the proposed Dogecoin fee changes aim to do
At the center of the conversation was Dogecoin’s proposed fee structure. According to the material referenced in the report, the changes were intended to shift more decision-making power over transaction inclusion back to miners rather than the relay network. They were also designed to improve configurability across fee-related parameters, giving individual node operators and the broader community more sovereignty.
The proposal outlined several key adjustments: lowering the minimal relay fee to 0.001 DOGE, reducing the dust limit to 0.01 DOGE, setting the default block inclusion fee rate to 0.01 DOGE, restoring a functional free transaction space, and cutting the default fee rate to 0.01 DOGE. These changes align with Musk’s previously stated interest in making Dogecoin significantly cheaper and more efficient for payments.
Back in May, Musk had said he hoped to see 10x higher block-related performance and 100x lower fees. While that ambition was not presented as a formal roadmap, it has clearly informed the public narrative around Dogecoin’s utility as a fast, low-cost transactional network.
Transaction costs remain central to the argument
The article noted that the then-current cost to send Dogecoin was 0.0052 DOGE per byte, which translated to roughly 2.13 DOGE per transaction, or about $0.454 based on prices at the time. During the first week of May, Dogecoin transaction fees reportedly climbed as high as $2.37 per transfer, a period when DOGE’s market price was substantially higher than it was later in the summer.
