The ERC-8004 standard went live on the Ethereum mainnet at 9:00 AM ET on January 29, 2026. Proposed in August 2025 by experts from the Ethereum Foundation, MetaMask, Google, and Coinbase, the protocol introduces a trust layer for AI agents operating in open networks. According to proposer Davide Crapis, it tackles the core issue AI systems have always faced: trust.
Previously, AI agents could only collaborate effectively inside closed, pre-verified environments. In the public domain, an agent had no reliable way to verify another agent's authenticity, skills, or safety. ERC-8004 solves this with three registries: an identity registry (like a passport), a reputation registry (showing past performance), and a validation registry (skills certificate). These three tools enable AI agents to discover each other, verify trust, and offer services across platforms in a permissionless manner.
This upgrade positions Ethereum as the foundational infrastructure for a “machine economy,” where autonomous systems can handle booking services, payments, customer support, and automated finance. The blockchain becomes trust's permanent carrier, eliminating the need for large intermediaries.
Why ETH Price Is Up: Multiple Signals Converge
News of the standard launch directly impacted price. According to CoinMarketCap, ETH is trading at $3,007, up more than 2% in 24 hours and outperforming the broader crypto market. The rally is underpinned by multiple data points: 175.5 million active wallets on-chain; over 36 million ETH locked in staking; $53.45 million in ETH ETF inflows this week; and whale wallets accumulating 81,000 ETH. Combined with ERC-8004's narrative boost, these figures reflect strong confidence in Ethereum's trajectory.
On the technical side, RSI near 46 indicates neutral sentiment and balanced momentum. MACD is stabilizing, often a precursor to a new directional move. If ETH holds above $3,000, a short-term push toward $3,150 to $3,200 is plausible.
Short-Term Price Range and Key Levels
Based on current conditions, the ETH price path: if ERC-8004 adoption news continues to circulate, a test of $3,200 is possible; the asset is likely to oscillate between $2,950 and $3,100; if profit-taking intensifies, a pullback toward $2,880 could occur. Yet regardless of near-term volatility, ERC-8004 has given Ethereum a new narrative—no longer DeFi or NFTs, but the trust layer for the AI economy. As the community put it: this upgrade is not a short-lived price pump, but real infrastructure.
