Privacy is the power to selectively reveal oneself to the world. This iconic passage opens Eric Hughes's 'A Cypherpunk's Manifesto,' published in 1993. More than a call for internet privacy, it became the ideological blueprint for the entire cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Privacy vs. Secrecy: A Critical Distinction
Hughes immediately distinguishes privacy from secrecy. Privacy is not about hiding everything; it is about the individual's right to decide when, to whom, and how much information to disclose. In the electronic age, every transaction and interaction leaves data footprints. Without privacy protections, individuals lose control over their own information. Hughes notes that any party can speak of their memory of an interaction; free speech is even more fundamental than privacy. Thus, privacy cannot be protected by restricting speech; instead, anonymous systems must be designed from the ground up.
Anonymous Transaction Systems: The Bedrock of Privacy
Hughes argues that privacy in an open society requires anonymous transaction systems. Cash in the physical world is the classic tool — when you buy a magazine with cash, the clerk does not need to know your identity. But in the digital realm, most transactions expose identity. Therefore, systems must be built that empower individuals to reveal their identity only when desired. Anonymity is not secrecy; it grants the power of choice. This principle directly shaped the design of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies: public ledgers with pseudonymous identities.
Cryptography: The Shield of Privacy
The manifesto stresses that privacy also requires cryptography. When you speak, you want only your intended audience to hear. If content is globally accessible, privacy vanishes. Encryption signals a desire for privacy; weak cryptography signals indifference. Moreover, when anonymity is the default, cryptographic signatures enable reliable identity revelation. Hughes candidly states that governments and corporations will not grant privacy out of benevolence — they benefit from speaking about us. Information longs to be free, filling every available storage space. Individuals must actively defend their own privacy.
Cypherpunks Write Code
'Cypherpunks write code' is one of the manifesto's most famous lines. Since someone must write software to defend privacy, and privacy is impossible unless everyone participates, Cypherpunks do it themselves. They publish open-source code for all to use and know that software cannot be destroyed — a widely dispersed system cannot be shut down. Cypherpunks deplore regulation on cryptography because encryption is a private act that removes information from the public realm. Laws stop at borders, but cryptography will inevitably spread globally, bringing anonymous transaction systems with it.
Social Contract and Collective Action
Hughes concludes that for privacy to be widespread, it must be part of a social contract. People must come together to deploy these systems for the common good. Cypherpunks welcome questions and concerns but will not be diverted from their course. They are actively making networks safer for privacy.
Today, cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Zcash are direct technological embodiments of the Cypherpunk vision. Satoshi Nakamoto referenced cypherpunk ideas in the Bitcoin whitepaper; privacy technologies such as verifiable communication, mixers, and zero-knowledge proofs all trace back to Hughes's manifesto.
