ERPC has integrated x402 into a JSON-RPC proxy running on Solana mainnet, turning RPC access into a per-request USDC payment flow. Under the setup described by the company, a standard RPC call sent without payment data receives an HTTP 402 “Payment Required” response first. The client then uses the quoted amount and network details to attach USDC payment information on Solana, and the original query result is returned only after the payment is verified.

RPC access now includes pricing and settlement in the request flow

The change alters how developers consume infrastructure. Instead of relying on monthly subscriptions, prepaid balances, or usage quotas, the payment step is folded into the API request itself. A query is made, the cost is shown, payment is submitted, and the response is delivered. ERPC said each Solana RPC method carries its own computational weight, which sets the price in US dollars, with a minimum charge of $0.001 per request. Lightweight calls such as status checks cost less, while heavier operations like getProgramAccounts cost more.

To reduce replay risk, the system rejects duplicate transaction signatures and returns an error code. ERPC also said it uses Coinbase Developer Platform’s x402 facilitator infrastructure during payment verification and reconciliation.

Designed for AI agents, analytics bots, and bursty workloads

ERPC presented the model as a better fit for software that consumes large amounts of chain data only at certain times. That includes AI agents, analytics bots, and automated monitoring tools. These users may need intense access in short windows, then little or none outside those periods. A metered model changes the cost structure. They can pay when demand spikes and avoid carrying an ongoing subscription when activity drops.

The setup also matches machine-to-machine payment logic. Educational material from Eco has described x402 as a system where HTTP 402 responses trigger stablecoin payments, removing the need for account creation or credit cards and allowing AI agents to pay directly for API access. ERPC’s announcement turns that idea into an operational Solana RPC implementation.

x402 existed before, but this is a live Solana infrastructure use case

x402 itself is not new. In March 2026, Coinbase said the protocol had been expanded to support almost all ERC-20 tokens in the EVM ecosystem, using Permit2 and gas sponsorship to make payments easier with assets such as USDT, DAI, and community tokens. That update widened payment options across EVM networks, but it did not center on Solana RPC infrastructure.

ERPC had also published an earlier update in October 2025 covering performance improvements for Solana RPC, gRPC, and Shredstream endpoints. At that time, the company highlighted lower latency and better stability while stating that pricing and authentication were unchanged. The new announcement moves to a different layer: payment and access management.

Adoption will hinge on operational constraints, not the concept alone

The significance of the rollout is practical. It shifts blockchain infrastructure access away from a “contract first, API key first, use later” structure toward a pay-as-you-go model tied directly to each request. That may suit applications with short bursts of high-volume demand. The harder questions sit elsewhere: spending limits for agents, authorization boundaries, wallet security, transaction fee overhead, and safeguards against abuse.

For now, ERPC’s deployment stands as one of the earlier real-world examples on Solana of linking stablecoin settlement directly to infrastructure access at the request level. Whether the model spreads more widely will depend on how those constraints are handled in production.
