Espresso Network launches ESP token with 10% community airdrop, total supply of 3.59 billion. The network offers ~6-second finality for rollups, positioning itself amid Ethereum’s Layer-2 roadmap debate.

The Espresso Network has officially launched its native ESP token, allocating 10% of the total supply to a community airdrop for early ecosystem participants and users of Espresso-integrated rollups. The Espresso Foundation announced a total supply of 3.59 billion ESP tokens, with the airdrop portion fully unlocked at launch.

The ESP token will be used for staking, network security, and protocol governance. Ben Fisch, CEO and co-founder of Espresso Systems, told CoinDesk: “The idea is to get the token circulating among members of our extended community, but also to reward early participation and adoption of the Espresso network.” Additional allocations for contributors, investors, future ecosystem incentives, and long-term sustainability will be subject to vesting schedules.

Built for Layer-2: Solving the Finality Bottleneck

Espresso acts as a coordination and finality layer for rollups, operating as independent execution environments. Fisch emphasized that Layer-2s only need finality from a Layer-1, measured by security and speed. The network currently finalizes rollup blocks in about 6 seconds on average, compared to Ethereum’s over-12-minute finality window. Fisch calls this gap a structural bottleneck as applications and liquidity spread across multiple rollups.

“Fast finality isn’t a nice-to-have for rollups,” Fisch said. “It’s the missing piece that transforms isolated chains into a unified, composable ecosystem.” He stressed that Espresso does not compete with Layer-1 or Layer-2 execution layers but is purpose-built to serve them.

Betting Amid Ethereum’s L2 Debate

The launch comes as the Ethereum ecosystem debates the future of Layer-2 networks. Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin recently suggested the network might eventually pivot away from an L2-centric roadmap as base-layer improvements reduce the need for rollups. This has raised questions about whether L2 infrastructure will remain relevant.

Espresso is betting that demand for application-specific rollups from institutions and consumer platforms will continue to grow regardless of Ethereum’s roadmap. “Fast finality isn’t a nice-to-have,” Fisch reiterated. The network plans to transition to a permissionless proof-of-stake model in the coming weeks. While the 10% airdrop may spark short-term market attention, most tokens remain locked or vesting, and investors should monitor the gradually increasing circulating supply.
