ETC Group, a London-based fund issuer acquired by Bitwise in August, has released a research report examining whether Solana and Aptos can become the next Ethereum. In its latest newsletter, analysts used a comprehensive Network Dominance Index to measure the market position of major smart contract platforms. The index scores Ethereum at 45%, Solana at 35%, and Aptos at 20%, with Ethereum maintaining a clear lead despite strong Q3 performances from its rivals.
Methodology and Background
ETC Group's Network Dominance Index is calculated by aggregating key metrics including network utilization, economic density, network activity, and adoption rates. This multi-dimensional approach provides a holistic view of each platform's competitive standing. Ethereum's score of 45% reflects “ongoing ecosystem expansion and sustained user engagement, despite facing increased competition,” according to the report.
Solana: Strong Momentum Under Pressure
Solana recorded impressive inflows and price performance during Q3 2024, positioning it as Ethereum's most prominent challenger. However, the report notes that Solana's “Ethereum killer” status has drawn increasing competitive pressure from other networks, including Aptos. Its index score of 35% marks a downward trend, indicating that Solana may be losing relative market share as alternative platforms gain traction.
Aptos: High Potential with Adoption Hurdles
Aptos also posted positive price performance in Q3, largely driven by the adoption of GameFi projects. The network has seen significant growth in user activity. Yet the report highlights a key risk: Aptos relies on Move, a relatively unknown programming language, as its primary development tool. “This might hurt its growth due to developer apprehension of switching to a new chain without clear incentives,” analysts wrote. Aptos scored 20% but shows a rising trend, suggesting it could soon challenge Solana for the second spot.
Ethereum's Resilience
Despite the emergence of high-performance competitors, Ethereum's established network effects, diverse application ecosystem, and deep liquidity continue to underpin its dominance. The report concludes: “Ethereum offers established dominance and stability, Solana demonstrates impressive growth and a proven track record, and Aptos shows potential for future innovation and ecosystem expansion.” While both Solana and Aptos have carved out their niches, Ethereum remains the benchmark for smart contract platforms, with its dominance index now at 45%.
