Ethereum is about to undergo its most transformative network upgrade since the Shanghai hard fork in April 2023. With Dencun, rollups can instead post their data in blobs, which are significantly cheaper per byte. This change is expected to reduce Layer 2 transaction fees by as much as 90% or more in many cases, while also increasing the overall throughput of the Ethereum ecosystem.

The upgrade optimizes the network’s resource allocation, preventing Layer 2 transactions from competing directly with user transactions for block space. Ethereum client teams have until February 22 to release their final client versions that support the Dencun upgrade. Validators, who operate the network’s nodes, will then have roughly two weeks to update their software to these new releases. The Ethereum Foundation has urged validators to update as soon as possible to ensure a smooth transition and avoid any network splits.
