The Ethereum Foundation announced Devconnect will take place in Buenos Aires later this year, featuring a World Fair to showcase stablecoins, DeFi, on-chain identity, and daily-life applications. Co-founder Vitalik Buterin proposed the idea in February, aiming to support the local community and ‘bring Argentina on-chain.’

The Ethereum Foundation has officially confirmed that Devconnect, its flagship developer gathering, will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, later this year. The event will introduce a novel World Fair format designed to offer an immersive experience of Ethereum’s real-world applications across identity, finance, governance, and everyday life.

Argentina’s Natural Alignment with Ethereum

Argentina’s selection as the host country reflects the nation’s deep organic connection with cryptocurrency. Plagued by chronic inflation and capital controls, many Argentines have turned to stablecoins for savings and remittances. The Ethereum Foundation noted that the local developer community is exceptionally active, making the region a fertile ground for on-chain innovation. “We want to bring Argentina on-chain by supporting the local ecosystem and showcasing what Ethereum can do for people facing real economic challenges,” a foundation spokesperson said.

The idea to bring Devconnect to Buenos Aires was first proposed by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin in February 2025, after he engaged with Argentine developers and witnessed the practical urgency of decentralized financial tools.

World Fair: An Ethereum Theme Park

The Devconnect World Fair will break away from traditional conference formats. Instead of lectures, attendees will interact with live demonstrations of Ethereum-based applications. Key zones include:

  • Finance (DeFi & Stablecoins): Live testnets of lending protocols, AMMs, and stablecoin payment gateways. Visitors can send small-value transactions using gas-free wallets.
  • On-Chain Identity: Experience decentralized identity (DID) creation and verification, including credential issuance via Ethereum Attestation Service.
  • Governance: Participate in simulated DAO votes and treasury management exercises to understand decentralized decision-making.
  • Day-to-Day Life: Explore supply chain tracking, ticketing, gaming, and charity applications that demonstrate Ethereum’s utility beyond finance.

“Stablecoins, DeFi, on-chain identities, public goods funding — all of it will be at the Ethereum Fair for people to try,” the Devconnect team said in its announcement.

Impact on Argentina and Latin America

The local government has expressed strong support, viewing Devconnect as a catalyst for tech employment and startup growth. Argentina’s blockchain association anticipates over 5,000 attendees globally, including developers, investors, and enthusiasts. The Foundation also plans to partner with local universities to offer developer training and hackathons, further cementing Buenos Aires as the Latin American blockchain hub.

The event comes at a critical time for Ethereum, which is scaling through Layer 2 solutions after transitioning to Proof-of-Stake. Presenting these low-cost, high-speed platforms in a high-inflation environment can accelerate adoption of micro-payment and savings tools. Organizers hope the fair will inspire similar community-driven initiatives across the region.

Official dates for Devconnect Buenos Aires will be announced shortly. The World Fair will be free to attend, though some exclusive workshops may require a selection process. More details are expected on the official Devconnect website.
