In a recent public statement, the interim executive director of the Ethereum Foundation clarified the organization's core mission: to ensure that Ethereum remains a truly permissionless, censorship-resistant, privacy-first, and credibly neutral infrastructure. This reaffirmation underscores the foundational principles that have guided Ethereum since its inception — anyone can participate in the network without permission, transactions and smart contracts are protected from censorship or discrimination, user data and activities are safeguarded with strong privacy, and the system's governance and operation remain neutral, not favoring any particular stakeholder.

As the premier supporting institution of the Ethereum ecosystem, the foundation's focus on infrastructure means its resources and strategy are prioritized toward work that maintains these essential properties. This includes protocol development, security auditing, decentralized governance research, and community education.
Systemic Risks to Defend Against
Alongside the mission statement, the foundation identified four systemic threats to Ethereum. First is MEV (Miner Extractable Value) abuse, where miners or validators reorder, insert, or censor transactions to extract extra value, undermining transaction fairness. Second is staking centralization risk — staking nodes concentrated in the hands of a few entities or service providers, weakening the network's decentralization. Third is the lack of privacy, as users' transactions and on-chain activities become easily traceable, violating fundamental financial privacy needs. The foundation believes that both protocol-level improvements and ecosystem-wide measures are necessary. For example, reducing MEV opportunities through protocol upgrades, promoting decentralized staking pool designs, introducing zero-knowledge proofs to enhance privacy, and standardizing the openness of transaction pipelines.
Long-Term Opportunities and Technical Directions
Beyond risk prevention, the foundation highlighted several long-term technical opportunities. Quantum-resistant cryptography is one: as quantum computing advances, existing elliptic curve cryptography could be broken, necessitating an early migration to quantum-safe signature schemes. Self-verifiable protocol stacks empower users to verify on-chain state independently, without relying on third-party nodes, which is critical for trust and decentralization. Secure scaling refers to increasing network throughput while maintaining security, for instance through sharding or layer‑2 solutions. Finally, the foundation sees sovereign digital cash as a core application — users fully control their digital assets without intermediaries like banks or payment processors.
