Ethereum Foundation staked 72,000 ETH using DVT-lite to lower institutional barriers. Vitalik advocates one-click distributed staking. Over 3.2M ETH sit in the validator queue, with total staked ETH nearing 37.5M.

The Ethereum Foundation has quietly executed a major staking test. Vitalik Buterin revealed that the foundation deposited 72,000 ETH (worth roughly $1.47 billion) into the validator entry queue using a simplified distributed validator technology called DVT-lite. The funds are expected to begin validating on March 19. The move directly targets the technical barriers that have kept large ETH holders from running validators.

DVT-Lite: Reducing Single-Point Failure Without Complex Setup

Traditional solo staking runs a validator on a single machine. An outage or hack can trigger slashing penalties, making institutions hesitant to rely on one computer for high-value infrastructure. Fully distributed validator technology splits keys across multiple machines but requires complex coordination and expertise.

DVT-lite introduces a middle ground: multiple machines share the same validator key. If one machine fails, another takes over instantly, slashing downtime risk and avoiding costly penalties. Buterin criticized the notion that infrastructure must be complicated, writing on X: "The idea that 'running infrastructure' is this scary complicated thing where each person participating must be a 'professional' is awful and anti-decentralization." He envisions staking software that runs via a one-click Docker container or Nix image.

Staking Demand Surges: 3.2M ETH Queue Waits 55 Days

Despite weak ETH price action, staking demand continues to climb. According to ValidatorQueue data, roughly 3.2 million ETH sit in the validator entry queue, with a 55-day wait. In contrast, the exit queue holds only 29,000 ETH, clearing in about 12 hours.

Total staked Ether now stands near 37.5 million ETH (roughly $76.5 billion), representing 31% of Ethereum's total supply. That value rivals the market caps of companies like DoorDash and Motorola. Buterin stated: "We want the authority over staking nodes to be highly distributed, and the first step to doing this is to make it easy."

If DVT-lite proves viable, it could unlock a wave of institutional validators who previously lacked the operational expertise. The Ethereum Foundation's own capital commitment makes this experiment a critical industry reference point for balancing simplicity and decentralization.
