Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade was activated on the Sepolia testnet on Tuesday, raising the block gas limit from about 60 million to nearly 200 million and expanding processing budget by more than three times for scaling-related tests. Observations cited by CoinDesk across more than 25 consecutive test blocks showed actual gas usage ranging from roughly 52 million to 92 million, or 26% to 46% of the available ceiling, indicating the network has not yet approached saturation under the new settings. Data from testing group ethPandaOps also showed that during a six-minute voting window early Thursday, all 32 scheduled blocks were successfully proposed, while 99.97% of eligible testnet stake voted to support finalization. The upgrade also changes gas costs for some operations and adjusts transaction execution and data access so validators have more time to check computation, while software can prefetch account and storage data touched by transactions to improve parallel processing. The next testnet, Hoodi, is tentatively set for Oct. 27, depending on Sepolia results. No mainnet date has been set.

Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade went live on the Sepolia testnet on Tuesday, with the block gas limit increasing from about 60 million to nearly 200 million. That lifted the processing budget by more than 3x as developers test scaling-related changes.

According to CoinDesk’s observation of more than 25 consecutive test blocks, actual gas usage ranged from about 52 million to 92 million. That was equal to 26% to 46% of the available limit, with no sign yet of blocks running close to full capacity.

Voting window and testnet performance

Data from testing team ethPandaOps showed that during a six-minute voting period early Thursday, all 32 scheduled blocks were successfully proposed. At the same time, 99.97% of eligible testnet stake voted in support of finalization.

What the upgrade changes

Glamsterdam also adjusts gas costs for some operations and changes how transaction execution and data reads are handled. The update gives validators more time to check transaction computation, while allowing software to prefetch the account and storage data involved in transactions to improve parallel processing.

What comes next

The next testnet, Hoodi, is tentatively scheduled to start on Oct. 27. The exact timing depends on Sepolia test results. Ethereum has not set a date yet for the Glamsterdam upgrade on mainnet.
