A new independent entity called Ethereum Institutional has been launched to serve as a dedicated contact point for Wall Street players engaging with Ethereum. The initiative is independently funded by BitMine Immersion Technologies and SharpLink, both publicly listed companies that hold substantial Ethereum on their balance sheets.
Independent entity targets institutional onboarding
According to its mission statement, Ethereum Institutional will help institutions move from assessment to large-scale adoption. It builds on earlier outreach efforts by the Ethereum Foundation but operates with full financial and operational independence. BitMine and SharpLink, as prominent publicly listed Ethereum treasury holders, provide commercial credibility to the initiative.
The launch comes just days after the unveiling of Ethlabs, a separate not-for-profit R&D organization founded by former Ethereum Foundation researchers. Representatives described the two ventures as complementary pillars for Ethereum's next phase: Ethlabs focuses on protocol-layer innovation and infrastructure, while Ethereum Institutional acts as a trusted counterpart for institutional adoption.
Foundation cuts staff amid restructuring
The new entities emerge at a time when the Ethereum Foundation faces increasing criticism. Long responsible for the network's technical development, the Foundation has been accused of not doing enough to support ETH's price or improve public perception. In a major overhaul, the Foundation laid off 54 employees, roughly 20% of its workforce. The downsizing followed the release of a 38-page Mandate document and an updated treasury policy in March.
Several senior leaders and influential figures have stepped down in recent months, intensifying debates over governance and priorities. The Foundation stated it aims to operate with a leaner and more focused model after the restructuring.
Price and governance debates heat up
Discussions have moved beyond organizational structure. Some former core contributors have proposed dedicating significant resources to address Ethereum's prolonged weak price performance, an indirect critique of co-founder Vitalik Buterin's idealistic philosophy. The rapid launch of Ethlabs and Ethereum Institutional suggests that technical development and institutional outreach are being split into separate entities. The debate over the Foundation's role in Ethereum's future is likely to continue in the months ahead.
