A recent study by Total Processing, a merchant services company, reveals that Ethereum (ETH)-related YouTube videos garnered a staggering 231 million views over the past 12 months, surpassing Bitcoin (BTC) which captured 199.9 million views. The research, published on April 9, 2021, analyzed over 10,000 cryptocurrency-focused videos to determine which digital assets drew the highest audience engagement on the platform.
Ethereum Dominates, Bitcoin Follows
Ethereum and Bitcoin together accounted for roughly 430 million views, more than four times the views of the third-ranked asset. Chainlink (LINK) secured the third spot with 45.7 million views, followed by Cardano (ADA) at 43 million views. Other top assets include XRP (38.5 million), Litecoin (LTC, 27.5 million), Uniswap (UNI, 27.3 million), Binance Coin (BNB, 25.4 million), Tether (USDT, 22.8 million), and Polkadot (DOT, 18.8 million). Total Processing noted that while Bitcoin's price surged approximately 700% over the period, Ethereum's 1,100% price rally likely fueled even greater content creation and viewership.
Content's Market Impact
The study also highlights the power of individual crypto influencers. For instance, a video by the channel JRNY Crypto, in which the host explained which altcoins he would buy, led to a 189.68% price increase for StormX (STMX) within seven days. Total Processing emphasized that YouTube has become a critical platform for crypto education, news, and even market-moving sentiment. The company stated: 'YouTube’s role is just as significant as traditional media in cryptocurrency adoption.'
Methodology and Limitations
Researchers processed roughly 10,000 English-language cryptocurrency videos published between April 2020 and April 2021. They identified videos by keywords and channel categorization, excluding non-English content and obvious duplicates. While the data may underrepresent non-English speaking communities, English remains the dominant language for crypto content globally. Additionally, YouTube's algorithmic amplification may inflate views for the largest assets, but the relative ranking still offers valuable insights into community interest.
Implications for the Crypto Ecosystem
The shift in viewership from Bitcoin to Ethereum suggests a growing curiosity around smart contracts, DeFi, NFTs, and other applications beyond digital gold narratives. As the crypto market continues to mature, YouTube's role as a primary information gatekeeper is likely to expand. The study underscores that video content not only reflects but also shapes market dynamics, making platforms like YouTube essential for both investors and projects seeking visibility.
