This surge comes despite Ethereum's price drop in 2026. The staking ratio has climbed to 31%, reflecting sustained holder confidence even amid bearish price action.
Institutions and Exchanges Leading Demand
Industry feedback points to large enterprises and cryptocurrency exchanges as the primary drivers of the current staking wave. These entities are choosing to generate yield on idle crypto assets rather than selling during market rallies. Additionally, exchanges offering liquid staking products have made it easier for institutional clients to participate without operating their own validator nodes.
Analysts suggest that Ethereum's expanding use cases in payment infrastructure and AI-related applications are further fueling institutional interest. The network's potential to tokenize real-world assets (RWA) and support decentralized AI agents is attracting long-term capital.

The prolonged wait time presents challenges for investors seeking immediate staking exposure. While liquid staking solutions offer workarounds, they introduce counterparty risks and liquidity premiums. The current queue length approaches historical peaks seen after the Shapella upgrade in 2023, when staking withdrawals were first enabled.
