Ethlabs, an independent non-profit research and development organization backed by treasure firms including BitMine, has published a tweet thread addressing community questions after its first week of existence. The organization stressed its role as an "additional complement" to the Ethereum ecosystem, operating in a complementary and cooperative relationship with the Ethereum Foundation (EF) rather than competing or replacing it.
Funding Status and Fundraising Strategy
Ethlabs stated that it has not yet disclosed a specific fundraising amount, but the funding commitments already secured are sufficient to support team operations for 2-3 years, including talent recruitment. The team emphasized that subsequent fundraising will be ongoing rather than a one-time raise. The community round remains open and is expected to close after announcing a new batch of supporters. Notably, the donation address has been updated from eth-labs.eth to ethlabs.eth, though both addresses remain usable.
This "continuous fundraising" mechanism is seen as a form of self-accountability: the team must earn ongoing community trust to survive long-term, thereby incentivizing transparency and efficiency in R&D direction.
Three Core Pillars: Chain, Platform, Growth
Although specific milestones and roadmaps are still being finalized, Ethlabs shared three key areas of current focus:
- Chain: Core protocol work, including L1 execution layer scaling, blob scaling (improving data availability), and reducing finality and transaction inclusion time.
- Platform: Building an intermediate layer between the protocol and developers, covering cross-chain interoperability, block building market, and EVM roadmap optimization.
- Growth: Deploying the Fast Confirmation Rule and other technologies on mainstream L2s and centralized exchanges (CEXs). This rule can reduce the deposit time from Ethereum to L2s/exchanges to seconds, though it requires individual integration by each party.
These three pillars correspond to the underlying protocol, infrastructure platform, and ecosystem promotion, indicating Ethlabs' intention to contribute to Ethereum's technical evolution in a "full-stack" manner.
Relationship with Ethereum Foundation and Non-Profit Governance
Addressing community concerns about whether Ethlabs would replace or weaken the Ethereum Foundation, the team clarified: "Ethereum does not belong to any single institution." The EF, client teams, core developers, L2s, wallets, and others are all indispensable parts. Ethlabs positions itself as an "additional complement" conducting independent R&D in areas where the EF may not yet cover or where additional support is needed.
Regarding the choice of non-profit structure, Ethlabs explained that its backers are primarily ETH holders and Ethereum builders, and that funders do not gain control over direction or roadmap influence through their contributions. This mechanism enables the team to maintain independence and community accountability.
