The European Commission has classified OpenAI’s ChatGPT as a "Very Large Online Search Engine" and designated Reddit and Roblox as "Very Large Online Platforms," according to Bloomberg. The EU said the services crossed the threshold of 45 million monthly active users in the region, bringing them under stricter obligations set by the Digital Services Act, or DSA.
Under those rules, the platforms must step up how they handle illegal and harmful content, file transparency reports, submit risk mitigation plans, and pay an annual supervisory fee to the EU. The law also requires stronger protections for minors and more transparency around advertising practices.
Bloomberg added that violations can lead to fines of as much as 6% of a company’s global annual revenue. EU regulators have already opened more than a dozen investigations into online platforms under the DSA.
