Since 2014, the largest Bitcoin wallet has changed hands multiple times. Currently, Binance's cold wallet holds 248,597 BTC (~$6.66B), dominating since March 2021. A look back at the history from US government seizures to Bitfinex, Huobi, and Binance.

Bitcoin's auditable and transparent ledger allows anyone to track the largest holders, often referred to as the 'Bitcoin Rich List.' As of mid-2023, the single largest Bitcoin address is controlled by Binance's cold wallet, holding 248,597 BTC (worth approximately $6.66 billion), which accounts for about 1.28% of the total circulating supply. This wallet was first observed in October 2018 and has since processed 790 incoming transfers and only 42 outgoing transfers, indicating its role as a long-term storage facility. However, this dominance is a relatively recent phenomenon—just nine years ago, the largest wallet belonged to the U.S. government after it seized 144,342 BTC from the Silk Road's Dread Pirate Roberts (DPR).

Binance's Rise to the Top

Binance did not always hold the largest stash. Archived data from February 3, 2021, shows that Huobi's cold wallet was the largest with 141,452 BTC, followed by Bitfinex (110,011 BTC), while Binance's cold wallet was only the fourth-largest with approximately 92,881 BTC. By the end of February 2021, Binance had climbed to second place. The tipping point came on March 10, 2021, when Binance's cold wallet balance reached 143,528 BTC, surpassing Huobi to become the largest Bitcoin address in existence. It has held that title ever since. The wallet reached its all-time high in June 2021, when it held approximately 299,427 BTC, before gradually declining. Notably, the address has been relatively inactive in 2023, with only one significant outbound transaction—2,000 BTC sent on January 7—though it continues to receive small 'dust' transfers almost daily.

Historical Whales: From Government Seizures to Exchanges

The history of the largest Bitcoin addresses reflects the shifting custody landscape. On February 9, 2014, the U.S. government became the top whale after seizing assets from Silk Road operator Ross Ulbricht (DPR). After the government auctioned those bitcoins in February 2015, the '19KJZ' address took over with 180,060 BTC. Data from 2016 is incomplete, but by April 2017, Bitstamp led with 128,440 BTC. In January 2018, a Bittrex cold wallet held 179,203 BTC. The following year, Bitfinex's cold wallet became the largest, with an older Binance wallet as the second-largest. In 2020, Huobi's cold wallet rose to the top, pushing the older Binance wallet to fifth place (about 89,684 BTC). The regime shifted again on March 10, 2021, when Binance's new cold wallet (address 34xp4) assumed the top spot.

Today, Binance's cold wallet holds 70,587 BTC more than the second-largest wallet (Bitfinex's, with 178,010 BTC). It is the only Bitcoin address with a balance exceeding 200,000 BTC. Despite the recent trend of Bitcoin outflows from centralized exchanges, not a single satoshi has left this massive cold wallet since January 2023. The dominance of Binance marks a significant departure from the early days when the largest holder was a government entity, highlighting the centralization of Bitcoin custody within major exchanges.
