The disappearance of a 74-year-old Chinese-American man in California has drawn the attention of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as authorities probe the suspicious depletion of his bank accounts tied to gold and cryptocurrency purchases. Nai Ping Hou was last seen on March 16, 2025, in Rancho Cucamonga, California, and has not been heard from since.

FBI Investigates Drained Accounts

On April 20, 2026, the FBI Most Wanted account on X (formerly Twitter) confirmed that federal and local law enforcement are jointly investigating the case. According to the FBI notice, Hou's bank accounts were drained before authorities were notified. His son, Wen Hou, told investigators that over $1 million had been withdrawn and used to buy gold and cryptocurrency. Wen emphasized that his father was not experienced with online transactions, making these purchases appear highly suspicious.

“My father rarely used mobile banking, let alone traded cryptocurrencies,” Wen Hou said in an interview. “These transactions are completely out of character.” He suspects someone may have gained control of his father's phone or accounts to carry out the transfers.

Eerie Scene at Home and a Reward for Information

When family friends checked Hou's Rancho Cucamonga home, they found it empty, the lawn overgrown, and handprints on the garage door. Furniture, vehicles, and personal belongings were missing. Hou had been planning home renovations after a major water leak in January 2025, but the work never started.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department conducted a thorough search of the property, including under floor tiles, in search of evidence. Investigators believe the case may involve kidnapping. A family-run website is offering a reward of up to $250,000 for information leading to Hou's safe return or the arrest and conviction of those responsible. The site states: “Naiping was not located and evidence indicated Naiping may have been kidnapped. There has been unexplained and suspicious activity with Naiping's financial accounts and property: draining of his accounts, unauthorized sales of his vehicles, gifting of items, and attempted renting of his home.”

Cryptocurrency and Gold: A Double Enigma

The case highlights ongoing concerns about the misuse of cryptocurrencies in illicit activities. While blockchain transactions are transparent, mixers, over-the-counter trades, or purchases through unidentifiable exchanges can obscure the trail. The FBI is investigating the counterparties involved in these gold and crypto transactions, and whether organized crime groups are behind them.

Notably, Wen Hou's description of his father as technologically unsophisticated suggests that someone else may have manipulated the transactions. Similar cases have emerged in recent years, where criminals use social engineering or threats to force victims to transfer assets, often leveraging cryptocurrency's pseudonymity to cover their tracks.

Investigation Continues

As of now, the FBI and local police are actively seeking Nai Ping Hou. Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI via its hotline or website. Further updates will be released as the investigation progresses. This disappearance serves as a stark reminder for cryptocurrency users: safeguard your private keys and account information, and remain vigilant against any suspicious financial activity.
