The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has revealed that it is currently investigating 130 cryptocurrency-related cases, according to Supervisory Special Agent Kyle Armstrong. Speaking at the Crypto Evolved conference in New York, Armstrong stated that these cases are 'threat tagged' to virtual currencies and encompass crimes including human trafficking, illicit drug sales, kidnapping, and ransomware attacks.

FBI's Crypto Investigation Landscape

Armstrong, who leads the FBI's virtual currency initiative, noted that the bureau maintains a neutral stance on digital tokens but has observed an increase in illegal activities facilitated by cryptocurrency payments. 'There are thousands of cases in the bureau, so it (the 130 crypto-related cases) is a small sliver at this point,' he explained. The opioid epidemic has become a key focus, with the dark web enabling a surge in drug abuse. Additionally, the FBI has seen a significant rise in extortion schemes related to virtual currencies along the U.S. southwest border.

Legislative and Enforcement Responses

In its fiscal year 2018 budget request, the FBI sought 80 positions and $21.6 million to enhance investigative technology for combating cybercrime, including identifying online pedophiles and drug traffickers who use anonymizing technologies and virtual currencies. The U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed a bill to curb illicit use of cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin, dash, zcash, and monero. Furthermore, the Department of Justice announced the seizure of nearly 2,000 bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies valued at over $20 million in a nationwide undercover operation targeting darknet vendors.

These developments underscore the dual nature of cryptocurrencies: offering financial innovation while being exploited for criminal purposes. As regulatory frameworks evolve, law enforcement agencies are intensifying efforts to trace on-chain activities and uphold security.
