Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler submitted her resignation letter to President Donald Trump on Friday, effective August 8, reigniting speculation about the future leadership of the U.S. central bank.
Kugler, who was appointed by former President Joe Biden and has served less than two years on the Board of Governors, will leave the Fed to return to Georgetown University as a professor of public policy and economics. She holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and previously served as chief economist at the U.S. Department of Labor and as U.S. executive director at the World Bank.
Trump Calls for Powell's Resignation
President Trump wasted no time in using Kugler's departure to pressure current Fed Chair Jerome Powell. In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: “'Too Late' Powell should resign, just like Adriana Kugler, a Biden Appointee, resigned. She knew he was doing the wrong thing on Interest Rates. He should resign, also!” Powell's current term as chair expires in May 2026, but Trump has long expressed dissatisfaction with his rate-setting policies.
During a CNBC interview on Tuesday, Trump revealed his shortlist of potential replacements for the Fed chair position. The four individuals he named are: Christopher Waller (current Fed governor), Kevin Warsh (former Fed governor), Kevin Hassett (Director of the National Economic Council), and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. However, Trump noted that Bessent prefers to remain in his current role. “He likes being Treasury secretary,” the president said.
Market Implications and Crypto Impact
Kugler's resignation comes at a critical juncture for monetary policy. As a relatively dovish governor, her exit could accelerate Trump's efforts to reshape the Fed's leadership to align more closely with his economic agenda. Analysts warn that a new chair, particularly one perceived as more hawkish or more politically aligned, could alter the trajectory of interest rates and monetary policy, impacting risk assets including cryptocurrencies.
Investors in the crypto space will be closely watching the nomination process. Any shift toward a more accommodative or unpredictable monetary stance could influence liquidity flows into digital assets. Meanwhile, the four candidates named by Trump each carry distinct policy inclinations: Waller is seen as a moderate, Warsh as a former Wall Street figure with hawkish leanings, and Hassett as a Trump loyalist with strong fiscal views.
The timing of Trump's official nomination remains unclear, but the announcement is expected before year-end. With Kugler's resignation effective August 8, the pressure on Powell is likely to intensify, setting the stage for a high-stakes leadership battle that could reshape U.S. economic policy in the years ahead.
