On April 18, 2025, Namecoin (NMC), the first altcoin in cryptocurrency history, marked its 13th anniversary. Launched on April 18, 2011, the network has faded from mainstream memory but still boasts one of the highest proof-of-work hashrates in the crypto ecosystem, reaching an impressive 487.40 EH/s.
13 Years of Innovation: From DNS to NFT Pioneer
Namecoin emerged 835 days after Bitcoin's genesis block, forked from Bitcoin's codebase to create a decentralized domain name system (DNS) and identity management framework. Its primary application is registering and resolving ".bit" domains, which are not controlled by any single authority. Notably, the "bitcoin.bit" DNS name is considered the first non-fungible token (NFT) asset. Hundreds of thousands of .bit domains have been minted to date.
To acquire a .bit domain, users must hold NMC tokens and install the Namecoin Core client or a compatible wallet. The process involves executing the `name_new` command (omitting the .bit extension), waiting roughly 12 blocks to prevent front-running attacks, and then using `name_firstupdate` to finalize ownership. Holders can later use `name_update` to modify or renew domains and resolve .bit addresses via browser extensions or private DNS servers.
Low Token Price but Active Development
As of April 18, 2025, NMC traded at $0.98, far below its all-time high of $13.11 on November 29, 2013. The token has not revisited those levels and often slips from collective memory. However, development remains vibrant: Namecoin Core 28.0 Beta was released in December 2024; contributors presented at key conferences throughout 2024 and 2025; and new features like SocksTrace continue to receive funding from the NLnet Foundation's NGI0 Core Fund.
Immense Hashpower via Merged Mining
Despite its obscurity in mainstream crypto conversations, Namecoin's PoW hashrate is extraordinary. At 487.40 EH/s, the network's computational power is massive—thanks to merged mining with Bitcoin. Bitcoin miners secure NMC without additional processing costs, allowing leading BTC mining pools to allocate a portion of their vast hashrate to Namecoin.
Namecoin's enduring existence, sustained by merged mining and continuous developer contributions, highlights its role as a pioneering experiment in decentralized domain services. Its sustained hashrate and ongoing protocol enhancements illustrate the crypto community's commitment to Bitcoin's sister chain. While its token price remains modest, Namecoin's security achievements reaffirm its potential influence going forward.
